  • A retirement mobilities approach to transnational ageing

Open Access•Mihaela Nedelcu, Livia Tomás et al.•ARTICLE•Mobilities•2024•References: 74

Transnational ageing processes are usually studied by focusing on the various cross-border practices and mobilities of different categories of ageing migrants. This paper introduces a retirement mobilities approach as an analytical framework that draws on both transnational studies and the new mobilities paradigm to widen the theoretical and empirical debates. It argues that both migrant and non-migrant populations, as well as human and non-human…

  • Life satisfaction among skilled transnational families before and during the Covid‐19 outbreak

    Open Access•Roxane Gerber, Laura Ravazzini•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 27

International mobility has radically changed during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Among all types of families, transnational families might have particularly suffered in 2020 during lockdowns that restricted international visits to family members. This paper focuses on the life satisfaction of skilled migrants living in Switzerland before and during the COVID‐19 pandemic. In particular, we focus on those who live long‐distance transnational relationship…

  • Welfare solidarities in the age of mass migration: Evidence from European Social Survey 2016

    Open Access•Dimitri Gugushvili, Laura Ravazzini et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Politica•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 42

Welfare opinion research has traditionally viewed migration as a potential hazard for welfare solidarity. In this article, we argue that while increased presence of foreigners can indeed make some people less supportive of public welfare provision in general or trigger opposition to migrants’ social rights, the link between migration and solidarity is not universally a negative one. Instead, many people can combine support for migration with high…

  • Inequality and Wealth: Comparing the Gender Wealth Gap in Switzerland and Australia

    Laura Ravazzini, J Chesters•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 12

Although the gender gap in incomes has been extensively researched, scant attention has been paid to the gender wealth gap. This paper compares the gender wealth gap in Australia with that of Switzerland. Using data from the 2010 Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) and the 2012 Swiss Household Panel (SHP), this study attributes the gender wealth gap to differences in permanent income and education. Furthermore, the gender …

  • Which Inequality Makes People Dissatisfied with Their Lives? Evidence of the Link Between Life Satisfaction and Inequalities

  • Do Opposites Attract? Educational Assortative Mating and Dynamics of Wage Homogamy in Switzerland, 1992–2014

Open Access•Laura Ravazzini, Ursina Kuhn et al.•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2017

This paper addresses homogamy and assortative mating in Switzerland. The empirical analysis monitors trends for education and hourly wages using the Swiss Labour Force Survey and the Swiss Household Panel. The analysis disentangles the effects of educational expansion from mating patterns and incorporates not only couples, but also singles. Results show an increasing level of assortative mating both for education and for wages. For wage homogamy,…

  • The Impact of Female Labour Force Participation on Household Income Inequality in Switzerland

Open Access•Ursina Kuhn, Laura Ravazzini•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2017

This contribution investigates the link between female labour force participation and household income inequality using data from the Swiss Household Panel (2000-2014). Through index decomposition analyses, we find that female labour force participation has slightly attenuated household income inequality over time. Women’s entry into the labour market, higher work percentages within part-time work - but not the shift from part-time to full-time w…
