Measuring the standard of living in shared‐care families—Challenges and insights
This methodological article aims to acquire a better understanding of how current research in the traditional income distribution literature considers shared‐care families and what kind of implications these approaches pose for measuring the economic well‐being of children living in two homes. Second, it provides insights on how to measure the economic standard of living of individuals in shared‐care families. These aims are related to research g…
Income Inequality
This state-of-the-art volume presents comparative, empirical research on a topic that has long preoccupied scholars, politicians, and everyday citizens: economic inequality. While income and wealth inequality across all populations is the primary focus, the contributions to this book pay special attention to the middle class, a segment often not addressed in inequality literature. Written by leading scholars in the field of economic inequality, a…

Labour Income, Social Transfers and Child Poverty
This paper documents the variation in living standards of the poorest fifth of children in rich (and some middle-income) nations, with a focus on the relative importance and interaction of social transfers (net of taxes) and labour market incomes. Overall, the cross-national variation in the disposable income of disadvantaged children is comprised equally of variation in market and transfer income (with the two negatively correlated). The English…
Trends in Life Expectancy by Income and the Role of Specific Causes of Death
This study explores how life expectancy at age 35 has evolved across the income distribution in Sweden over time. We examine individual income for men 1970–2007 and family income for both men and women 1980–2007. During this period, income inequality increased in most western countries, but especially so in Sweden. Drawing on a large sample of the Swedish population, our results show that the gap in life expectancy between the richest and poorest…
Tony Atkinson and his Legacy
Tony Atkinson is universally celebrated for his outstanding contributions to the measurement and analysis of inequality, but he never saw the study of inequality as a separate branch of economics. He was an economist in the classical sense, rejecting any sub‐field labelling of his interests and expertise, and he made contributions right across economics. His death on 1 January 2017 deprived the world of both an intellectual giant and a deeply com…
The Contribution of Early‐life Versus Labour Market Factors to Intergenerational Income Persistence
We explore whether differences in intergenerational income mobility between the UK and Sweden show up early in life, finding stronger associations between parental income and birthweight, height and school performance in the UK. We investigate whether these differentials can account for the country difference in income mobility. While differences in the associations in birthweight and height are too weak to matter, school performance does account…

Income Inequality
This book presents original empirical research on economic inequality in affluent countries, using comparable data from two widely-recognized, high quality, data sources: the Luxembourg Income Study Database and the Luxembourg Wealth Study Database. Both of these publicly-accessible databases are housed at LIS, a cross-national data archive that is directed by the book's two Editors. The volume's seventeen empirical chapters explore change over t…

Intergenerational Income Mobility and the Role of Family Background
This article deals with the transmission of economic inequality from one generation to the next. Section 2 presents a theoretical discussion of the mechanisms that may explain the associations between income and family background. Section 3 discusses the income concepts used in this research. Section 4 explains the measures used to describe family associations in income while Section 5 offers a cross-national overview of recent estimates of famil…
The impact of macroeconomic conditions on income inequality
The effects of workplace downsizing on cause-specific mortality
BACKGROUND: Experience of workplace downsizing (ie reduction in personnel) is common and may constitute a threat to public health in working populations. This study aimed to determine whether downsizing was associated with increased mortality among those remaining in the downsized workplaces. METHODS: Prospective population registration data containing detailed socioeconomic and demographic information on 85 833 Finnish employees aged 35-64 years…

Growth and Equity in Finland
This paper reviews Finnish economic history during the à  ́longà  ́ twentieth century with a special emphasis on policies for equity and growth. We argue that Finland developed from a poor, vulnerable, and conflict-prone country to a modern economy in part th
A More Efficient Estimate of the Effects of Macroeconomic Activity on the Distribution of Income
The effects of unemployment and inflation on quintile shares of family income in the United States are estimated by means of generalized least squares. Inflation is found to have a significant progressive impact on the distribution of income. The results also lend support to earlier findings regarding the regressive effects of unemployment. Child Poverty in Sweden and the United States
The authors compare the incidence and some of the causes of child poverty in Sweden and the United States in selected years using data from the Luxembourg Income Study. The U.S. sample is restricted to white non-hispanic children to present the most favorable comparison with Sweden's more homogeneous population. When parents' labor force participation and demographic characteristics are taken into account, the proportion of children in families w…
