  • The praxis of transformation and adaptation to climate change

Open Access•Shilpi Srivastava, Lars Otto Nae et al.•ARTICLE•Global Social Challenges Journal•2025

This article aims to examine and further develop the concept of praxis – processes to critique the status quo and search for alternatives – in relation to transformative adaptation to climate change. The need for transformative change to support climate change adaptation is clear. However, there are gaps in our understanding of connections between, on the one side, individual and household-level action, and on the other, the broader structural ch…

  • Transformation in the context of uncertainty and compounding effects

Open Access•D Parthasarathy, Shilpi Srivastava et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2025•Referencias: 9

The paper explores how deliberate transformation may arise from ‘below’ in marginal environments with high levels of climatic uncertainty. • Using the lens of transformation as praxis, we highlight pathways and practices that facilitate or impede transformative change. • Using a transdisciplinary approach, the focus is on exploring pathways to transformation drawing on bottom-up approaches. • We attempt to co-produce hybrid knowledge(s) combining…

  • Mapping the Pluralities of Agrarian Change in India

    Open Access•Avinash Avinash, D Parthasarathy•ARTICLE•Sociological Bulletin•2023•Referencias: 5

The agricultural economy of Jharkhand is primarily understood to be ‘subsistence’ agriculture. However, an ongoing agrarian change in rural Jharkhand has drawn less academic attention. This substantial change is from indigenous seeds to high-yielding varieties of paddy seeds enabling food sufficiency in the villages to a larger extent. In addition, the introduction of commercial crops like vegetables, watermelons and marigolds is another attendan…

  • The Political Ecology of Covid-19 and Compounded Uncertainties in Marginal Environments

    Open Access•Lyla Mehta, D Parthasarathy et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Human Dynamics•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 18

In this paper, we use a political ecology lens to look at how COVID-19 adds to a set of existing uncertainties and challenges faced by vulnerable people in the marginal environments of coastal India. Over the last few decades, local people have been systematically dispossessed from resource commons in the name of industrial, urban and infrastructure development or conservation efforts, leading to livelihood loss. We build on our current research …

  • Climate Justice for Whom? Understanding the Vernaculars of Climate Action and Justice in Marginal Environments of India

Open Access•Shilpi Srivastava, Shibaji Bose et al.•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•2022

As calls for climate action gain momentum, governments and international organisations are committing to ambitious climate targets and scaling up their climate action. In this article, we argue that to address climate change, ‘just’ climate action is required which moves away from portraying local communities as ‘victims’ and/or ‘beneficiaries’ and focuses on investing in their social and material capabilities so that they determine their futures…

  • Transformation as praxis

Open Access•Lyla Mehta, Shilpi Srivastava et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2021•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 10

This paper provides some of the conceptual and methodological underpinnings being developed in the ongoing TAPESTRY project which is part of the Transformations to Sustainability (T2S) Programme. We debate how the notion of transformation may be conceptualized from ‘below’ in marginal environments that are especially marked by high levels of climate-related uncertainties. We propose the notion of transformation as praxis — where the focus is on b…

  • Cityscape Transformation and the Temporal Metamorphosis of East Kolkata Wetlands

    Open Access•Sana Huque, Sarmistha Pattanaik et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Bulletin•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

Cities are changing globally because neoliberalism demands so. But the impacts of these changes do not remain confined within urban limits only. Kolkata similarly is attempting to change itself in leaps and bounds because it has to keep up with the demands of neoliberalism. However, along with the city, the wetlands in the eastern vicinity of Kolkata are also undergoing a major transformation. This article attempts to look at these transformation…

  • Knowledge Generation for Innovation in Ayurvedic Cosmetics MSMEs

    Open Access•Deepmala Baghel, D Parthasarathy•ARTICLE•Science Technology and Society•2019

This article addresses links between entrepreneurs’ cultural and symbolic capital and their practices of knowledge generation for innovation. Through an ethnographic study of four Ayurvedic cosmetics manufacturing MSMEs in Mumbai, we argue that innovation in cosmetics MSMEs is the result of conversion of cultural capital into symbolic capital that in turn converts into economic capital. The study shows that Ayurveda knowledge resides in the entre…

However, classical problems of inequality, social justice and an all-pervasive uncertainty affecting vulnerable populations are inadeq…

We focus on socio-religious interactions and divergences as crucial sites for the production of a discourse on the economy of worship, devotion and social equality. Popularly understood as a procession to Pandharpur, wari is understood here as a social force mediating the transmission of ideas and practices through the interface of vario…

Coastal urban cities frequently face multiple hazards, including potentially disastrous extreme events. To combat this, vulnerability assessment is essential to developing an effective mitigation strategy. This study proposes a framework to assess the vulnerability of any densely populated urban area to disasters by considering both the population and the assets that are at risk. Deepmala Baghel, D Parthasarathy et al.•ARTICLE•South Asian Popular Culture•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

  • Is Migration Status a Determinant of Urban Nutrition Insecurity? Empirical Evidence From Mumbai City, India

    Open Access•Neetu Choudhary, D Parthasarathy•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2009

From an economic perspective that understood it as a spillover of development, migration is now also the subject of socioeconomic investigation incorporating the problems of assimilation, relative deprivation and isolation. The corollary is an increased emphasis on economic and social understanding of migration and its consequences. This entails studying migration or migrants in terms of factors beyond income. Health outcome is important among th…

  • Social and environmental insecurities in Mumbai

    D Parthasarathy•ARTICLE•Society in Transition•2009

Over the last few years Mumbai — India's financial and cammercial capital — has been affected by adverse climatic events leading to flooding and landslides resulting in high loss of lives and property. While different sections of the population were affected, the poor and the socially marginalized — living in environmentally risk prone areas — were more affected than others. In view of the dearth of comprehensive studies linking social vulnerabil…

  • Measuring or defining sustainability? Impact assessment of an agricultural technology

    D Parthasarathy•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2002

This report is of a study to assess the efficiency and sustainability impacts of a seed-based technology for pigeonpea in semi-arid central India. The problem of integrating environmental assessment with economic and social impact assessment arises from an artificial separation of the social and natural sciences, and the ‘disciplinization’ of the social sciences. Thus sustainability must be defined in a way that pre-empts the need to integrate re…
