  • Right-wing terrorism and far-right support

Open Access•Gábor Simonovits, Attila Gáspár et al.•ARTICLE•Political Science Research and…•2026

How do ethnically motivated terrorist attacks shape electoral support for the far right? We study a unique case: a coordinated series of anti-Roma murders in Hungary in 2008–2009, the most severe episode of anti-minority violence in the country since World War II. Combining difference-in-differences and synthetic control methods, we compare attacked settlements to multiple counterfactuals, including planned-but-unrealized targets. We find that Jo…

  • Corruption and extremism

Open Access•Attila Gáspár, Tommaso Giommoni et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•References: 10

This paper shows that corruption generates extremism, but mainly on the opposition side. While corruption hurts all citizens, only voters on the minority side may desire to switch to a more extreme representative when they perceive a more corrupt political system. In our model, campaigning on a corruption scandal against the incumbent gives a higher winningprobability for the opposition politician but simultaneously reduces expected future rents …

  • Inequality perception and preferences globally and locally - correlational evidence from a large-scale cross-country survey

    Open Access•Attila Gáspár, C Cervone et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2024•References: 5

Using a large, representative survey involving 31 countries, we establish stylized facts about the attitudes toward cross-country economic inequality and their correlates. This question has been surprisingly understudied for a topic so important to our globalized $$21^{st}$$ 21 st century. We present a simple and intuitive theoretical framework for thinking about cross-country inequalities. Then, we show that people’s perceived and desired levels…

  • A Twofold Subjective Measure of Income Inequality

    Open Access•Attila Gáspár, C Cervone et al.•ARTICLE•Social Indicators Research•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Social scientists have been aiming to calculate a 'subjective income Gini coefficient'of survey respondents that would describe their beliefs about income inequality in their country. Niehues (Subjective perceptions of inequality and redistributive preferences: an international comparison, Cologne Institute for Economic Research, IWTRENDS Discussion Paper, 2014) derives this estimate from respondents' beliefs about the relative sizes of different…

  • Social Mobility and Political Regimes

Open Access•Paweł Bukowski, Gregory Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This paper measures social mobility rates in Hungary during the period 1949 to 2017, using surnames to measure social status. In those years, there were two very different social regimes. The first was the Hungarian People's Republic (1949-1989), which was a communist regime with an avowed aim of favouring the working class. The second is the modern liberal democracy (1989-2017), which is a free-market economy. We find five surprising things. Fir…

Our data suggest that hepatitis B virus vaccine coverage in Brazil should be extended to include teenagers in populations that have a low to moderate hepatitis B virus prevalence. It is likely that our results can be extrapolated to other areas of Latin America with a similar epidemiological pattern

Open Access•Afonso Dinis Costa Passos, Uilho Antônio Gomes et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Saúde Pública•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Open Access•Afonso Dinis Costa Passos, Uilho Antônio Gomes et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Saúde Pública•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 8
