    Open Access•Gudmund Ågotnes•ARTICLE•Praxeologi – Et kritisk…•2025

In this chapter, addressed to students, practitioners and scholars within the social professions, the theoretical foundation of community work and the widespread application of ‘social capital’ within it will be discussed. The chapter aims at furthering a critique of ‘social capital’ as presented by Putnam and others’, both with regards to its conceptualization (Portes, 1998) and its more hands-on application within community work (Deflippis, 200…

  • The doxa of smoking and implications for lung cancer patients

    Open Access•Charlotte Nilsen, Gudmund Ågotnes•ARTICLE•Praxeologi – Et kritisk…•2025

This paper explores the stigma associated with smoking and lung cancer patients by examining the doxical notions on which it rests and its implications for healthcare settings. Through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of doxa, we analyse how historical advertising and anti-smoking campaigns have reshaped the image of smoking – from glamorous to self-inflicted and filthy – reinforcing a ‘stacked stigma’ characterised by impurity, self-blame, …

The concept of 'ageing in place', understood as enabling older adults to remain in their own homes as long as possible, has gained significant attention in policy discussions worldwide. Bu trygt heime' [Community and Coping. Live Safely at Home]. The findings rev…

  • But where's the body? Bodies, time, money, and the political economy of post-pandemic field research

    Open Access•Donna Baines, Susan Braedley et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2025•References: 22

Since the pandemic, field work has been transformed by shifts in the political economy affecting the material conditions underpinning research. In this research note, a research team considers their challenges and learning in completing field studies conducted in 2022, including intensified strains on time, money, researchers' bodies, and risks associated with illness and infection spread. We argue that a neoliberal 'research super-hero' norm ope…

Drawing on the metaphor of “care convoys,” this study explores the experiences and strategies of family caregivers of older adults with dementia in rural areas of Northern Norway. The study is part of a broader project that investigates how these older adults and their caregivers use or do not use municipal health and care services. We conducted qualitative in‐depth interviews with 11 family caregivers in rural municipalities. The thematic analys…

Gudmund Ågotnes, Tom Daly et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Care and…•2024•References: 1

This article compares community services provided to older adults living in Bergen, Norway, and Toronto, Canada. We investigate the gaps that are left unattended in the respective jurisdictions and consequently maintained by the organizations. Our findings reveal the importance of community organizations in positively influencing the initial transition from independence to needing more supports. Our findings show differences between the jurisdict…

  • From volunteer work to informal care by stealth

    Open Access•Gudmund Ågotnes, Jill-Marit Moholt et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2023•References: 25

In the context of current and expected demographic changes, the issues of which services the welfare state should offer and, ultimately, the very function of the welfare state are currently debated in Norway. The political discourse on health and care services for older adults has morphed into an accepted reality in which the system must be altered, prompting policy makers and stakeholders to find new and novel solutions to problems associated wi…

  • Technology as ‘time saver’ and the ‘saviour’ of older adult care

    Open Access•Yngvild Brandser Alvsåker, Gudmund Ågotnes•ARTICLE•Praxeologi – Et kritisk…•2022

This paper analyses the political articulation and understanding of ‘technology-supported care’ for older adults in central Norwegian public policy documents. In these documents, technology is increasingly presented both as a time saver and a life saver for the welfare state. Drawing on data from document analysis of official green and white papers from the period 1973-2018, the paper describes and seeks answers to how healthcare policies have ev…

  • Perspectives on Migrant Care Workers in the Long-Term Care Sector

Open Access•Gudmund Ågotnes, Palle Storm•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2022

Nursing homes for older seniors are considered an integral part of the Nordic welfare regimes, with a comparatively large proportion of employed native-born women. This is partly under change. An ageing population in interplay with increased difficulties recruiting native-born care workers have raised questions of how to approach present and future workforce challenges. A proposed response to this challenge is the recruitment of migrant care work…

In this paper, we explore the needs of older adults for social interaction by investigating how local and everyday communities are produced by service organisations and experienced by their patrons. We approach the social needs of older adults through the lens of 'community,' both as a concept and as a lived experience. Our attention to communities of peers and arenas for everyday interaction is discussed in the context of the dominant policy dis…

  • Facilitating resident community in nursing homes

    Open Access•Gudmund Ågotnes, Christine Øye•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Residents in nursing homes are old and frail and are dependent on constant care, medical, or otherwise, by trained professionals. But they are also social beings, secluded in an institutional setting which is both total and foreign. In this setting, most of the residents most of the time must relate to other residents: other residents are the nursing home residents' peers, companions, and perhaps even significant others. In this article, we will …
