Envisioning AI futures
Dystopian AI tropes, grounded in science fiction, are pervasive in popular culture, but the effects of these narratives on lay orientations toward socio-technological futures remain under-researched. The article distinguishes between imagination (what people can envision) and expectations (what they think is likely), and explores the influence of science fiction on both. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with young adults, we identify an “AI …
Disappointment or hype? Framing artificial intelligence in the US elite news media
How do elite US news outlets frame AI within accounts of hype, disappointment and tempered expectation? This study finds that rather than fueling hype, coverage tends to adopt a cautious tone – emphasizing everyday uses and current impacts over speculative futures. A content analysis of three high-profile US dailies shows more positive tones when only developers or vendors discuss their own AI tools. The findings underscore journalists’ important…
Cross-cultural challenges in generative AI
Previous discussions have highlighted the need for generative AI tools to become more culturally sensitive, yet often neglect the complexities of handling content about marginalized groups, who are perceived differently across cultures and religions. Our study examined the responses of two generative AI systems to homophobic statements and explored how their outputs varied when different societal and religious context information about the user w…
Entangled AI
While debate is heating up regarding the development of AI and its perceived impacts on human society, policymaking is struggling to catch up with the demand to exercise some regulatory control over its rapid advancement. This paper aims to introduce the concept of entangled AI that emerged from participatory backcasting research with an AI expert panel. The concept of entanglement has been adapted from quantum physics to effectively capture the …

Participants engaged in a 4-week series of surveys, questioning their definitions and projections about AI for the field of media and communication. Their expectations predict universal access to democratically available, automated, personalized and unbiased information d…
Shifting job expectations in the era of generative AI hype – perspectives of journalists and copywriters
Purpose This interview study examines Hungarian journalists' and copywriters' expectations of generative AI’s impact on their professions and factors influencing these views during a period of hype. Design/methodology/approach While acknowledging the specialized knowledge of journalists and copywriters relative to the general public, the study employs the sociology of expectations framework to interpret their anticipations not as objective foreca…
Younger generations' expectations regarding artificial intelligence in the job market
There is a deficiency of in-depth explorations of young people's visions of automation and work, and how these relate to popular projections found in the future-of-work debate. This article investigates such expectations, drawing on 62 interviews with Hungarian university students undertaking non-technical majors. Key characteristics of the interviewees' accounts included their malleable and changing nature. Although respondents were aware of the…
Visions of Hungarian Artificial Intelligence Specialists About the Future of Work and Their Roles
In an international context where social effects and ethics related to artificial intelligence (AI) are receiving more attention, there is a dearth of research about how AI specialists perceive the future of work and their role in bringing about the respective future. Does the fact that ethics and social issues are receiving more publicity impact AI specialists’ views? The current study advances knowledge about this issue by describing a deep qua…
A torn generation
In a research study among university students regarding technological change, equality and environmental sustainability, deep-seated dichotomies were found in the students' mental images of the future. This study aims to present these dichotomies as well as propose explanations for them, adding to our understanding of what kind of behavioural barriers inhibit sustainability transformations. The results show that the interviewees truly struggle to…
The attitudes of young citizens in higher education towards universal basic income in the context of automation—A qualitative study
One of the primary reasons for introducing the discussion about universal basic income (UBI) into political debate was to understand whether UBI could serve a good response to the negative consequences of technology‐driven job replacement. It is also a question whether citizens would accept UBI. Based on 30 interviews with Hungarian university students, we investigate the attitudes of young citizens to the introduction of UBI in a hypothetical sc…
Artificial intelligence and the future of work - lessons from the sociology of expectations
Purpose What is the future of work going to look like? The aim of this paper is to show how the sociology of expectations (SE) - which deals with the power of visions - can make important contributions in terms of thinking about this issue by critically evaluating the dominant expert positions related to the future-of-employment- and artificial intelligence (AI) debate. Design/methodology/approach After providing a literature review regarding SE,…
A cél, hogy legyen egy kisbabád, és minden mást félreteszel” – Etikai keretek az embriókkal kapcsolatos döntéseknél a lombikeljárás során
Amióta 1978-ban megszületett az első in vitro fertilizációs (IVF) kisbaba, világszerte rengeteg csecsemő fogant lombikbébi-eljárás segítségével.
Fertility myths, technology myths and their sources - Lay reasoning about age-related fertility decline
In many societies the average age for giving birth is rising. One factor which could contribute to the timing of childbirth – which has not been explored to a sufficient degree with qualitative research – is lay understanding of fertility and the possibilities offered by reproductive technology. Twelve focus groups were used to examine the reasoning of female university students in Hungary about agerelated fertility decline, how they thought repr…
Networks in the Social Sciences
While the question of networks have appeared in social sciences since decades, they can be still regarded as one of the significant concepts which grasps the imagination of both theorists and empirical researchers. Because of this interest many different forms of network approaches have been developed. In many cases these theoretical and analytical developments have occurred relatively independently from each other using different vocabularies an…
Improving Data Quality and Avoiding Pitfalls of Online Text-Based Focus Groups
Despite the fact that there are several practical advantages of online typed focus groups, this type of group questioning has not spread as widely as had been expected when it appeared as a new research option. One of the reasons for that might be that a major risk of these text-based focus groups is inadequate data quality. Unless certain measures are taken to prevent this, an analysis can face the problem of not being rich enough and not diggin…
Exploring gender culture at a telecommunications company
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to interpret the expectations, the norms and values related to gender within the concept of organizational culture. Over the past decades, organizational researches have paid great attention to cultural research and feminist theories have increasingly examined organizations from the angle of gender. The research the authors conducted in a business organization attempts to link these two areas. Design/methodo…
Issues in the Analysis of Focus Groups
In this paper I discuss some concerns related to the analysis of focus groups: (a) the issue of generalisation; (b) the problems of using numbers and quantifying in the analysis; (c) how the concrete situation of the focus groups could be included in the analysis, and (d) what formats can be used when quoting from focus groups. Problems with respect to generalisation are discussed; types of generalisation are presented which can be used in focus …
GM Crops in Hungary
Unlike some Western societies, in Hungary there has not been intensive public debate on the issue of genetically modified crops. The mass media has published little to inform Hungarian lay people about GM crops or their relevance to the country. Nevertheless the media did convey some general impressions, mainly from within an Anti-GM Threat frame. Several elements from the mass media were present in lay focus group discussions – e.g. GM crops bra…

A Scheme for Analyzing the Results of Focus Groups
In this article the author presents a scheme that can be used to evaluate the results of focus groups. The novel feature of the scheme is that it involves the situational factors in the analysis: interactional factors, the environment, time factors, the content, personal characteristics of the participants, and the characteristics of the moderator. The author argues that it is worth taking these into account in making an analysis. If the analysis…
