Flavors of adaptation: Columbus, Ohio, as a stage of interaction for Mediterranean and Mexican restauranteurs
This article describes Columbus, Ohio, as a stage of interaction between local consumers and ethnic restaurateurs. We, one of us having completed an MA thesis on Mediterranean food in Columbus, and the other whose dissertation fieldwork examined Mexican food in Columbus, detail how restaurateurs adapt to local conditions and meet the tastes of their diners. We examine how restaurateurs structure their eateries, decide the foods and flavors to ser…
Building Home, Building Success: Oaxacan Chefs in Columbus, Ohio
This article examines how Oaxacan chefs from Columbus, Ohio make their home and build their success. Prior scholarship shows how chefs establish home to offer themselves a springboard for future success, how chefs foster home through cooking and enjoying familiar dishes, and that food is only truly ‘at home’ when found outside of its original context. Ethnographic interviews with Oaxacan chefs working in food hall stands, taco trucks, bakeries, a…

While the rate has slowed in recent decades, and in response to demographic forces that have impacted the area, there is still a steady flow of migrants moving to destinations within Mexico and to the United States. Yet not everyone chooses to migrate. In this paper, we review th…
Musical Interludes and Teaching Laboratory: Learning and Student Engagement in an Economic Anthropology Classroom
We report on two exercises, musical interludes and the teaching laboratory, we developed for use in Economic Anthropology courses. The Musical Interlude asks students to present a song to the class (typically using a music video) and responding to a series of questions, summarizing the ways it reflects course themes. For the teaching laboratory, students are organized into working groups and collectively analyse and present their selections durin…
Evaluating the indigenous response to Covid-19 in rural Oaxaca, Mexico
The novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has faded from the headlines as infection and mortality rates decline, yet remains a challenge to rural and indigenous communities in locations like Oaxaca, Mexico [1]. Rurality and indigeneity create further obstacles to communities’ effective response to the continued [...]
Let the Kids Play: Latino Players, Differing Play Styles and Racial Stigma in Major League Baseball
Major League Baseball's (MLB) unwritten rules and unspoken norms communicate the continuing role that white American cultural values have within the sport. Coded into the past and present, foreign-born players, especially those from Latin America, confront these norms as they arrive to MLB with a distinctly Caribbean tíguere style of play. MLB seeks to overcome these differences by promoting its young Latino superstars through the marketing campa…
