  • Settler imperial ordering

    Open Access•Federica Caso•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2025

How does settler colonialism shape world politics? While the framework of settler colonialism has become increasingly established across disciplines to analyse the structure and logics of settler societies, international relations (IR) scholarship continues to treat it as peripheral to global politics. This article challenges the view that settler colonialism is a matter of domestic politics with little relevance for world politics, demonstrating…

  • Settler militarism

    Open Access•Federica Caso•ARTICLE•Security Dialogue•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This article examines settler militarism and how it is mobilized through affective practices that ultimately bolster the settler colonial project. With this intent, it develops the concept of ‘militarized atmosphere’ defined as a staged environment where war is positioned outside politics and critical scrutiny through a series of affective manoeuvres and aesthetics. A militarized atmosphere operates through military aesthetics to attune people’s …

  • Indigenous Military Inclusion

    Open Access•Federica Caso•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Politics &…•2023

In the context of this special issue's inquiry into whether it is possible to decolonise Australian international relations, this article investigates the service of Indigenous people in the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The military is a crucial site to investigate the colonial state of Australian international relations not only because it is an institution that performs key international relations practices such as war and diplomacy, but als…

  • Settler Military Politics

    Open Access•Federica Caso•ARTICLE•International Political Sociology•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 38

Indigenous people are now integrated in the regular forces and represented in national war commemoration. This article maintains that while inclusion and recognition of Indigenous military service is a positive transformation in the direction of post-colonial reconciliation, it still operates within the logics of settler colonialism intended to eradicate Indigenous stories of connection to land and assimilate Indigenous people in settler society.…

  • Geology of the southern Gran Paradiso Massif and Lower Piedmont Zone contact area (middle Ala Valley, Western Alps, Italy)

    Open Access•Federica Caso, S Nerone et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2021

This work presents the structural evolution of a poorly studied key-area in the middle Ala Valley, Western Alps, where two tectono-metamorphic units are exposed. A geological map at the 1:10.000 scale, integrated with meso- and microstructural analysis, has been realised. We investigated the contact area between Gran Paradiso Massif in the footwall and Lower Piedmont Zone in the hanging wall. Both tectono-metamorphic units, with a different paleo…

  • Tipping Point

    Federica Caso•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2021

In January 2020, I collaborated with Brisbane-based artist Kay S. Lawrence to produce Tipping Point, an art exhibition on climate emergency hosted at House Conspiracy, Brisbane, Australia. Lawrence's art addresses climate emergency both politically through references to coal, animal extinction, and Australian policy, and poetically through metaphors conveyed with delicate materials, vertical arrangements, and stitching techniques. The exhibition …

  • Structural and geomorphological framework of the upper Maira Valley (Western Alps, Italy)

    Open Access•A Petroccia, M Bonasera et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2020

An interdisciplinary study has been adopted to investigate the upper Maira Valley (Western Alps, Italy). A geological map of an unmapped area, of about 12 km2, at scale 1:10.000, has been realized. The combination of field surveys, GIS database creation, aerial photo observation, local archival data consultation, geo-structural analysis and drillholes re-interpretation outlined a relationship between structures and landforms. A ductile and brittl…

  • Representing indigenous soldiers at the Australian War Memorial

    Federica Caso•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Political…•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 20

The article examines the latest exhibition commemorating Indigenous soldiers produced by the Australian War Memorial titled For Country, For Nation. It suggests that the exhibited material maps and visualises a neglected aspect of Indigenous history and as such expresses Indigenous resurgence and sovereignty. And yet, these artworks are not outside of colonial structures of power. While the article views the artworks of For Country, For Nation as…

  • Gender studies and popular geopolitics

    Federica Caso•CHAPTER•Popular Geopolitics•2018

In the spirit of demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of popular geopolitics, this chapter aims to outline how the interdiscipline of gender studies makes methodological and theoretical contributions to the study of popular geopolitics. It focuses on three pillars of gender studies: gender, sexuality, and the body, to demonstrate how these are integral to understand popular geopolitics, and are requisite for any interrogation of the politic…

  • Sexing the disabled veteran

    Federica Caso•ARTICLE•Critical Military Studies•2017•Cited by: 21•References: 29

This article examines a recent Kickstarter campaign, titled Always Loyal, aimed at funding the publication of a photographic project, with the intent of investigating its gendered and sexual aesthetics of militarism. The photographic project features physically disabled US veterans who pose in a sexually evocative way; for this reason, Always Loyal has been described as homoerotic. This representation of homoerotic disabled veterans runs against …
