Household Size as a Correlate of Divorce Rate: A County-Level Analysis
Divorce remains one of the main challenges facing American families today. Previous studies have shown that the risk of divorce is influenced by many factors, including spouses' characteristics and the types of neighborhoods in which they live. This study extends previous work by examining the association between household size and divorce rate at the county level using 1990 and 2000 county-level data. The results show that household size is nega…
The effects of multiracial identification on students’ perceptions of racism
This paper compares the differing perceptions of racism reported by White (n = 222), Black (n = 99), and White–Black multiracial (n = 45) students at an urban campus of a Southern university. Using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), we examine the differences between the racial groups in three campus contexts—campus in general, with instructors, and with other students. Items chosen for analysis included behaviors or actions experienced by at …
The Impact of Concentrations of Religious Denominational Affiliations on the Rate of Currently Divorced in Counties in the United States
This study examines the question Does the rate of currently divorced in counties in the United States vary inversely to the relative percentage of concentration of adherents of seven different religious denominational groupings-Catholic, Jewish, Mormon, conservative Protestant, moderate Protestant, liberal Protestant, and miscellaneous Protestant-within those counties? The analysis is based on data from the 1990 U.S. Census and the Glenmary Resea…
The Impact of Religious Homogeneity on the Rate of Divorce in the United States
This study extends the understanding of the relationship between religious homogeneity, that is, the extent to which formal religious groups are concentrated at the county level, and the rate of persons currently divorced in those counties. Linking the research question to Durkheimian precepts of religion as an integrative force in social life, the essential question is, 'At the county level, does the rate of currently divorced vary inversely wit…
Social Relationships, Emotional Closeness, and Loneliness Among Older Meal Program Participants
This study examines the social interactions older persons have with their children, spouses, and/or friends, the perceived emotional closesness present in these social relationships and the extent to which these relationships influence feelings of loneliness. Data from the participants were analyzed using ANOVA. Findings reveal that those who were married with no children or friends experienced the greatest loneliness, and that the emotional clos…

Health Care Utilization of Canadian Snowbirds: An Example of Strategic Planning
Older English-speaking Canadian seasonal migrants to Florida (N = 2046) were surveyed during the winter of 1986. They are users of two health care systems and are generally in good health. When they do need to use health care resources, however, they show a distinct preference for the Canadian system. There is a sensitivity to health concerns, especially among the older of the migrants. This sensitivity generates considerable precautionary behavi…
A Comparative Examination of Perceived Income Adequacy Among Young and Old in Sweden and the United States
This research examines the comparative perceived income adequacy among older Swedes and older Americans. The persisting issue of ‘poverty’ and income adequacy, and the use of monetary-unit income (dollars, kroner, etc.) as a basis for determining levels of poverty or of income adequacy has severe limitations. In an attempt to simplify the problem of developing standard measures for different monetary-unit systems, i.e. between nations, this study…

Growing old and lonely in different societies: Toward a comparative perspective
Health and Social Care for Elderly People in Sweden: Implications for Policy in the United States
Through a descriptive and analytical account of recent trends in the care of elderly people in Sweden, a number of lessons are indicated for America and countries with similar health and social welfare arrangements. Clarity of objectives within a ‘normalising’ framework; sound organisational arrangements based on small local areas; effective knowledge of services by consumers and cost-effective provision are factors identified as significant
An examination of the locus of desired control among young‐old and old‐old nursing home patients (1)
This research examined the locus of desired control among a sample of 218 nursing home residents. Two issues were addressed: (a) What is the predictive impact on locus of desired control of education, gender, race, functional ability, subjective health and length of stay among the residents in each of the two age groups? and (b) Was there a difference in the locus of desired control among the young‐old (74 years or less) and old‐old residents (75…
