Vulnerable groups in recessionary situations: The case of children and the young in Chile
Notes on health care planning in Latin America and the Caribbean
Attention is called to the fact that the efforts to improve health of populations in Latin America have generally failed. The inequality in the distribution of ill-health is great. The authors accept the fact that the lack of resources available to the health sector may be a restriction towards the improvement of the situation, but they argue that a much more important issue is the misuse of such resources and their maldistribution within the hea…

Migration, Mobility, and Occupational Achievement: The Case of Santiago, Chile
This study has been planned essentially in two parts. The first is descriptive attempting to determine differentials in mobility of migrants and non-migrants (e.g. what differences occur in upward and downward mobility or in inter- and intragenerational mobility). Also part of this initial analysis is an investigation of the process of occupational achievement that has been occurring and how migrants have been affected as compared to the natives …
The Dickensian Occupational Structure
Twelve of the novels of Charles Dickens provide a sample of 349 characters whose occupational achievement and mobility are investigated. The mobility patterns indicate more inheritance than in the United States. This cannot be accounted for by education, material inheritance, or morality (being a good or bad person). A model of quasi-perfect mobility, taking all diagonal frequencies as given, more closely represents the patterns. Determinants of …
