The Arctic Winter Games: A subversive model of sporting event amid resonance blockers
This research draws on resonance theory to analyse how the Arctic Winter Games (AWG) mitigate features linked with professionalized sport events – dynamics that can act as resonance blockers – to sustain conditions more conducive to resonance. Utilizing a qualitative multimethod approach, we analysed organizational documents, interviews, surveys and participant observation from the 2023 AWG and found that the AWG actively resist resonance blocker…
Iranian elite sportswomen: Docile yet defiant bodies
This article examines how elite Iranian sportswomen are governed and constituted within a sex-segregated sport system shaped by religion, state surveillance, and regime representation. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with elite athletes, coaches, and referees, the study uses a Foucauldian framework to analyze how technologies of power, including compulsory hijab, institutional monitoring, and symbolic national representation, regulate women…
Olympic dreams and neoliberal realities: The subjectivation of Brazilian athletes in high-performance sports
This study examines how Brazilian Olympians internalize, negotiate, and at times resist neoliberal discourses while navigating meritocratic ideals and the pressures of high-performance sport. Drawing on qualitative semi-structured interviews with eight athletes from Santa Catarina who competed in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, we analyze how neoliberal rationalities shape both their practices and subjectivities. Interviews conducted between 2021 and…
The diplomatic roles of Korean state-run sport for development programs
The Korean government established the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in April 1991 as an agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to design and execute most of its official development assistance (ODA) grants. Since then, KOICA has administered two forms of Korean sport grants: sport aid projects (e.g. the construction of sport facilities and provision of sport equipment) and sport technical cooperation programs (sport vol…
I’d like to think I’m a good referee’: Discourses of ability and the subjectivity of the female soccer referee in Ontario (Canada)
Female officials are side-lined within the soccer community through gendered relations of power, even in Canada, where women remain outnumbered as referees and in other leadership positions despite remarkable growth in the women’s game since the 1980s and its heightened respect and standing. Drawing upon Foucault’s concepts of discourse and subject, we explored the experience of female referees who had persevered in their role for 2 years or more…
The gendered barrel racer-horse relationship in Western Canadian rodeo
On investigating the gendered experiences of Western Canadian 'ladies barrel racing' rodeo competitors, the sportswomen we interviewed emphasized their unique bond with the horse as the distinguishing feature that made them 'legitimate' barrel racers compared to other rodeo cowgirls, and 'feminine' compared to cowboys. This paper further explores how the barrel racers studied focused on their rider-horse interaction to discursively separate thems…
Assessing the sociology of sport: On national and ethnocultural communities in Canada
On the 50th anniversary of the ISSA and IRSS, a leading Canadian scholar on sport, identities, and community, Christine Dallaire, considers the dynamic role of sport in reproducing national and ethnocultural communities in Canada. A diverse research agenda grew, merging considerations of not only the trajectory of Canada as a nation, but the meshing of immigrant and new national identities and the role of First Nations communities on the sport la…
‘I can choose’: The reflected prominence of personal control in representations of health risk in Canada
Multidisciplinary research has contributed to a better understanding of the personal and societal correlates of risk perception. However, representations of ‘health risk’ remain to be characterised more fully. Drawing on a Canadian study conducted in 2004, an analysis was conducted to develop better characterisations of individual representations of health risk. The study involved a national telephone survey (N = 1503) and face-to-face semi-struc…
Skateboarding Women: Building Collective Identity in Cyberspace
This article reconsiders the Skirtboarders' blog, produced by a crew of female skateboarders, as a space where crew members attempt to reflexively start a movement and, in doing so, construct and circulate a wider collective identity (Taylor & Whittier, 1992). Through a discourse analysis of blog comments and user interviews, we attempt to understand how young women who visit the blog interpret (re)presentations of female skateboarders and whethe…
Skirtboarders.com: Skateboarding Women and Self-Formation as Ethical Subjects
The Skirtboarders, a Montreal-based crew of female skateboarders, purposely challenge discourses of femininity through an Internet skateboarding blog. Interviews with crew members reveal the similarity between their sporting and Internet practices and processes that Foucault (1986, p. 28) referred to as “self-formation as an ‘ethical subject’”. We draw on the four aspects that Foucault outlined by which an individual constitutes herself as an eth…
Skirtboarder net-a-narratives: Young women creating their own skateboarding (re)presentations
By creating and posting their own stories on the Internet, sportswomen are able to challenge the persistent, sexist, mainstream and alternative (skateboarding) media (re)presentations of female athletes. A Foucauldian discourse analysis of 262 posts of the Skirtboarders' blog - a Montreal-based, Canadian female skateboarding crew's Internet project - explores the ways in which a group of sportswomen circulate alternative discourses of femininity.…
The Gap Between Knowing and Doing: How Canadians Understand Physical Activity as a Health Risk Management Strategy
In Canada, as in other neo-liberal states, a physically active lifestyle is discursively constructed as a moral activity, whereas a sedentary lifestyle is criticized as a failure to take charge of one’s health (Bercovitz, 2000; Lupton, 1997). This study aims to understand how Canadian men and women articulate the discursive connections between physical activity and health risks and how those connections are reflected in their reported behaviors. …

This study examined the coverage of women's and men's varsity sport teams in the English- and French-language student newspapers at the University of Ottawa, Canada, during three academic years from 2004 to 2007. The analysis revealed unique findings, considering that previous research on campus print media had shown an enduring disparity of coverage featuring female athletes. In contrast, our descriptive statistics exposed few differences in the…
