  • Understanding the Relationship Between Direct and Vicarious Police Contact and “The Talk”

    Open Access•Ashley N Jackson, Stephanie A Wiley et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2025•References: 65

Direct and vicarious police contact can be traumatic events, justifying the need for parents to prepare children for encounters with the police through a process known as “The Talk.” Police persistently target Black communities, and most research on “The Talk” is limited to Black families, so less is known about engagement in “The Talk” across different groups. Relying on a pooled sample of 8,842 racially diverse 8th to 10th-grade students, we ex…

  • The Talk I Received From My Parents, I Gave to My Little Brother

    Open Access•Betty L Wilson, Ashley N Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 89

While much literature examines racial socialization in Black families, specifically "the Talk," few studies focus on this process during emerging adulthood. Guided by relational communication and racism-related stress theories, this qualitative study examined Black emerging adults' experiences of "the Talk," a specific form of racial socialization that prepares Black individuals for encounters with racism and policing, and its impact on their per…

  • From Bright Plots to Blind Spots

Open Access•Andres F Rengifo, Sofia Flores et al.•ARTICLE•Criminal Justice and Behavior•2021

This study documents the extent to which prosecutors and judges in New Jersey deviate from new case review protocols post-bail reform. We draw on a random sample of hearings observed in two courts ( N = 372) to (a) map prosecutorial requests to depart from risk-based recommendations for pretrial monitoring and (b) explore patterns in judicial review signaling more limited case processing. Findings show that in 16% of cases, prosecutors deviated f…

  • Exculpating Injustice

Open Access•Sarah Gaby, David Cunningham et al.•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 17

Research notes the broad complicity of white public officials in historical racial violence and repression. These discussions emphasize the role of criminal justice actors in perpetrating and enabling this repression. Extending this assessment, the authors examine coroners' facilitation of white racial dominance through administrative performances constructing white innocence. Using cases from post-Emancipation South Carolina, the authors documen…

  • Can I Live”

    Open Access•Ashley N Jackson, Sheretta T Butler-Barne et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

State sanctioned violence aimed at Black individuals and communities is an issue that has pervaded American history and society since before the establishment of the United States. For Black males, anticipating and preparing for involuntary police contact, unfortunately, is an inevitable part of life. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of reports of police abuse on mental health and perceived racial out-group perceptions and the p…

  • Police Violence and Associations With Public Perceptions of the Police

Open Access•Ashley N Jackson, Lisa Fedina et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Society for Social…•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Objective: Police violence (PV) continues to be a national and global concern. Empirical inquiries focus on its prevalence, those who are most at risk, and associated mental health effects and frequently include all-male samples. Studies also tend to narrowly measure PV as incidents of physical force or fatal encounters. Our study examined these gaps in knowledge by exploring police neglect and psychological, physical, and sexual violence perpetr…
