  • Conceptualising multilingualism in higher education in Timor-Leste

    Tony Newman•ARTICLE•Teaching in Higher Education•2022

In this paper I present a critical discussion of the ways that multilingualism is conceptualised in the context of higher education in Timor-Leste, a small, developing nation in South-East Asia. Drawing on a range of ethnographic data collected at multiple Timorese tertiary institutions from 2015 to 2018, I focus especially on the language-related beliefs and practices of a small group of petroleum studies lecturers, who are at the meeting point …

  • Gig Expectations

Open Access•Christopher Corbel, Tony Newman et al.•ARTICLE•Written Communication•2022

This article explores the writing and reading requirements of the literacy practices, events, and texts characteristic of work mediated by the online labor platforms of the gig economy, such as Airtasker and Freelancer, which bring together people needing a job done with those willing to do it. These emerging platform-based discourse communities and their associated literacies are a new domain of social activity. Based on an examination of seven …

  • Literacy and the workplace revolution

Open Access•L Farrell, Tony Newman et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 23

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is widely acknowledged as a digital technological revolution building on the convergence of Robotics, the Internet of Things, and the Internet of Services. Literacy is a core social technology of work and it is changing as rapidly and radically as the digital technologies that are reshaping work, workers and working. Th…

  • Young Carers' and Disabled Parents

    Tony Newman•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2002•Cited by: 13•References: 12

In less than a decade, children who provide care for ill or disabled parents and siblings have become a major target of social welfare services. 'Young carers' suffer, it is suggested, from a degradation in mental and physical health, have damaged educational careers, restricted social networks, and will suffer long-term consequences in adult life as a result of their childhood caring roles. This paper argues that limited empirical evidence exist…

  • Everybody In? The experience of disabled students in further education

Angie Ash, JULIAN BELLEW et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•1997•Cited by: 6

The authors report on a study of student attitudes towards disabled students in three colleges of further education. They found that many non-disabled students were not aware of the various issues facing disabled students at the colleges. Social contact between disabled and non-disabled students was not extensive, although those who had attended school with disabled pupils were more likely to have friendships with disabled students at college. Wh…
