  • Three Provocations concerning the Uses of Populism

    Benjamin Arditi•ARTICLE•Populism•2024

This article outlines three provocations to shake up the comfort zone of populism studies. These are: that populism may have become an anachronism and we should think about moving on; that populism may work better as a term of derision, as democracy was for the ancient Greeks; that we should describe it as a historical phenomenon, something that happened in the mid-twentieth century but is no longer current. So, my suggestion to populism scholars…

  • El populismo como espectro de la democracia: Una respuesta a Canovan

    Open Access•Benjamin Arditi•ARTICLE•Revista Mexicana de Ciencias…•2013•Cited by: 2

  • Disagreement without reconciliation: Democracy, equality and the public realm

    Benjamin Arditi•ARTICLE•Critical Review of International…•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 8

Nancy Fraser claims that the public sphere did not live up to the assumption of strict equality envisioned by Arendt and Habermas. She also believes that socioeconomic equality is a necessary condition for a truly democratic public realm. This is problematic not because equality is an unworthy goal but because it ties its pursuit to classical narratives of emancipation and hence to an ethos of reconciliation, at least implicitly. I argue instead …

  • Arguments about the Left Turns in Latin America: A Post-Liberal Politics

Open Access•Benjamin Arditi, Benjamin Arditi Benjamin Arditi•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2008•Cited by: 25

This article proposes a conceptual framework to discuss the left and left turns in Latin American politics. It then proceeds to argue that winning elections—the recurrent criterion for these turns—might generate tremendous enthusiasm but is also a restrictive benchmark. Other indicators I discuss here include the left's agenda-setting capacity, its redefinition of the political and ideological center, and its incipient challenge of the liberal se…

The assumption of this article is that the “second great transformation” proposed by global actors parallels the one advanced by those who resisted laissez-faire capitalism in the 19th century. Both dispute the unilateral imposition of a new planetary order and endeavor to modify the rhythm and direction of economic processes presented as either fact or fate. In doing so, they effectively place the question of the political institution of this or…

More recently, the debate has shifted into something of a terra incognita as a result of the growing interest in the connection between populism and democratic politics. Neopopulism and neocorporatism are regular entries in our political lexicon, yet the meaning assigned to the prefix ‘neo’ is not as clear in the former as it is in the latter. The rather unambiguous meaning of neocorporatism derives from the conceptual stability of its classical referent in the mainstream literature of political science. In the case of neopopulism, the prefix has not fared as well, partly due to the contested status of populism a…

  • Polemicization: The Contingency of the Commonplace

    Benjamin Arditi, J Valentine•BOOK•Polemicization•1999

The distinctive feature of this book is its ingenious argumentative strategy: it takes on the political by developing a practice and a thought the authors call 'polemicization'. They draw from the recent work of the political philosopher Jacques Rancière, for whom a polemic or disagreement does not refer to the case when one interlocutor says white and another black. Instead, it designates the conflict arising when, for example, both parties say …

  • The negotiation of equivalence

    Open Access•Benjamin Arditi•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•1997

The paper deals with the status of referents for claims among conflicting claimants when multiplicity is a fact and there is no room for a substantive notion of community. It develops a notion of contingent and 'impure' universal as it arises in the negotiation of equivalence in scenarios of conflict between claimants. My argument is that measures of equivalence cannot conform to the caricature of absolute, all-encompassing referents intent on su…
