Impact of head and neck cancer on the income of Italian employees
Employer awareness about survivors' conditions can enhance workplace inclusivity. Furthermore, the implementation of ad-hoc policies may lead to a successful reintegration of H&N cancer survivors into the workforce
Does far-right populism affect immigrants’ working conditions
Anti-immigrant stances are central in far-right populist propaganda. We investigate whether the electoral success of far-right populist parties affects the labor market conditions of immigrants. Using administrative panel data from Italian manufacturing workers in 1994–2005, we show that higher electoral support for the populist party Lega Nord significantly increases injury risks for foreign workers within job spells. This effect is most pronoun…
Does the time spent in retirement improve health? An IV-Poisson assessment on the incidence of cardiovascular diseases
Working Conditions and Health Among Italian Ageing Workers
In many European countries requirements for retirement have been tightened, causing an increase in work participation of older workers, in spite their potentially poorer health may limit their work ability. This study aimed at assessing the diffusion of health problems and exposure to unfavorable working conditions among ageing workers in two Italian surveys, as well as comparing them with those observed in the same surveys conducted before the 2…
Transition to retirement impact on health and lifestyle habits
Individual data-linkage of multiple waves of the PLUS can offer great insight to inform healthy ageing policies in Italy and Europe. Transition to retirement has an independent effect on perceived health status, physical activity and selected behavioural risk factors. It should be identified as a target moment for preventive interventions, with particular reference to primary prevention so as to promote health and wellbeing in older ages
To Work or Not to Work? The Effect of Higher Pension Age on Cardiovascular Health
This study investigates the effect of pension age on hospitalization for cardiovascular diseases using administrative social security and hospital discharge records in Italy. The endogeneity of the retirement decision is addressed using an instrumental variable strategy exploiting the exogenous variation in pension age determined by quarter of birth. Results indicate a detrimental effect of higher pension age only for retirees who, before retirem…
Trading off wage for workplace safety? Gaps between immigrants and natives in Italy
We employ Italian administrative data to analyze the differentials in wages and workplace injuries between immigrants and natives over the 1994–2012 period. Via propensity score reweighting, we construct the factual and counterfactual, marginal and joint distributions of wages and workplace injuries. Examining the differentials along the entire distributions, our approach yields novel insights on their potential drivers. Our findings confirm that…
Differences in work injury risk between immigrants and natives
It is known that occupational injury rates are higher for immigrant than for native workers, however the effects of the economic cycles on these differences has not been assessed to date. The aim of the paper is to test if the crisis has the same mechanism of selection in the two groups by comparing injury rates in 2005 (before the crisis) and in 2010 (after the crisis). The Work History Italian Panel-Salute integrated database was interrogated t…
Occupational injuries in times of labour market flexibility
Cluster analysis allowed to identify career patterns with clearly different characteristics. A positive association between injury risk and the level of career fragmentation was found. The association cannot be fully interpreted in a causal way, since reversed causality and selection processes may be in action. However the study indicates a disadvantage for precarious workers, who face significantly higher risks of both minor and severe injuries
Job tenure and work injuries
In a context in which career fragmentation is increasing, workers find themselves more and more in the "high risk" period and only individuals who are able to build their career with similar jobs may mitigate the higher risks thanks to their past experience. If institutions don't adopt appropriate prevention policies, injury risk is likely to increase, especially among young people
From work to retirement
This paper contributes to the debate on ageing with an empirical assessment of how this issue has become evident in the Italian labour market in recent decades. To set the stage, we describe the effects of population ageing on the workforce, and how workforce ageing has been dealt with by firms of different dimensions. Then we focus on the working careers of older individuals, and particularly on the current modes of transition from work to retir…
