  • We want kids, not nukes’

    Open Access•H C Chang•ARTICLE•Environmental Sociology•2024•References: 12

Environmental Sociology has addressed gender, racial, and class dynamics within environmental movements, but the involvement of children, particularly in East Asia, remains under-researched. This article examines the representations of children in the news articles of Taiwanese anti-nuclear movements. With critical discourse analysis, the study examines 154 newspaper articles from two major newspapers published between 1987 and 2019. This article…

  • Climate strike or not? Intersectionality of age and culture encountered by young climate activists in Taiwan

    Open Access•H C Chang•ARTICLE•Childhood•2022•References: 40

While the mainstream discourses of global climate strikes focus on the issue of generational justice, the experience in the context of East Asia has been under-researched. This study explores the local experience and interpretation of this movement among the young activists in Taiwan. The results show that climate strike is currently impossible in Taiwan. This study discusses this from the intersectionality of age and culture, namely, obsession w…

  • Religion, Gender, and Bodies

    Open Access•Edgar Zavala-Pelayo, H C Chang•ARTICLE•Religions•2022•References: 25

The Presbyterian missions and medical missions in 19th-century Taiwan were successful enterprises that over time developed into the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, which stands today as the largest Christian minority church in this country. Through a Foucauldian biopolitical perspective, this paper analyzes the roles of female missionaries in the management of bodies and the subjective experiences of both foreign and Native women in the missions. …

  • The multiple roles of cord blood banks in Taiwan

    Open Access•H C Chang, Hung-Chieh Chang•ARTICLE•New Genetics and Society•2016

In Taiwan, as in many countries where national cord blood donation programs are not available, cord blood donation and banking services are provided by non-governmental sectors. This article discusses: (1) the various cord blood banking models to critically examine the public and private binary; and (2) the collaboration and networking between cord blood banks and other institutions as strategies in response to strict governance and fierce compet…

    Open Access•Margaret Sleeboom-Faulkener, H C Chang et al.•ARTICLE•New Genetics and Society•2016

In this article we explore regulatory developments in stem cell medicine in seven jurisdictions: Japan, China, India, Argentina, Brazil, the USA and the European Union. We will show that the research methods, ethical standards and approval procedures for the market use of clinical stem cell interventions are undergoing an important process of global diversification. We will discuss the implications of this process for international harmonization an…

  • Comparing national home-keeping and the regulation of translational stem cell applications

    Open Access•Margaret Sleeboom-Faulkner, Choon Key Chekar et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2016•Cited by: 8•References: 26

A very large grey area exists between translational stem cell research and applications that comply with the ideals of randomised control trials and good laboratory and clinical practice and what is often referred to as snake-oil trade. We identify a discrepancy between international research and ethics regulation and the ways in which regulatory instruments in the stem cell field are developed in practice. We examine this discrepancy using the n…

  • Modernity and Fertility Preference in Taiwan

    Open Access•Keiko Yamanaka, H C Chang et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1982•References: 17

Data from interviews with 973 Taiwan women between the ages of 15 and 44 having at least one child and living with husbands are used to study the effects of modernity and social status on fertility preferences. The modernity attitude contributes significantly to the explanation of fertility preferences independent of social status variables. Social status variables also contribute directly to the explanation of fertility preferences. But there is…

  • Ecological and Social Differentials in Mortality

    Brian F Pendleton, H C Chang•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1979•Cited by: 5•References: 17

Studies of differentials in mortality usually have been bivariate and without benefit of a theoretical structure. In this study, mortality is approached through a multivariate framework and conceptualized as an indicator of inequality resulting from differential life chances and styles, which, in turn, reflect general stratification processes. An ecological factor, residency, and a social factor, racial composition, are used to investigate four q…

  • Testing and clarifying a macro model of socioeconomic change and fertility

    H C Chang, Richard D Warren et al.•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1979•Cited by: 4•References: 9

This study examines human reproduction and its causal links to the socioeconomic conditions of society within the framework of the demographic transition. A theoretical fertility model for one hundred countries (28 more developed countries [MDC's] and 72 less developed countries [LDC's]) is subjected to path analysis. Findings for the hundred countries were mainly a function of the LDC's. Stronger support was found in the LDC's for the indirect f…

  • Correlated Denominators in Multiple Regression and Change Analyses

    Open Access•Brian F Pendleton, Richard D Warren et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1979•Cited by: 6•References: 36

Sociological and demographic research often uses variables computed as ratios. When the denominators are highly correlated, or identical, and the ratios are used in correlation or regression analysis, a statistical dependency is formed. Interpre tations and inferences may be difficult to make and misleading. This article has two basic purposes. The first is to show how this problem expands from bivariate correlation and regression to partial corr…
