  • Dynamics of changes in land use and land cover and perceived causes in Hakaluki Haor, Bangladesh

Ataur Goni Polash, Muktarun Islam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2023

To gain quantifiable and explainable changes in LULC about Hakaluki Haor in Bangladesh, this study employed Landsat satellite data to interpret LULC from 2000 to 2019. Four change detection analyses (2000–2005, 2005–2010, 2010–2015, and 2015–2019) were done to detect the shifting process of different LULC classes. There was significant rapid growth in human settlement (91.61 km2) between 2000 and 2019, while the same period witnessed a reduction …

Purpose It is still unclear how Asian universities incorporate the theory or practice of sustainable development (SD) in their research and education programmes. To address this gap, the purpose of this paper is to report on a study that has examined how universities in Asian countries handle and address matters related to SD. Design/methodology/approach The study used a bibliometric analysis and an online survey-method. The online survey data we…

Open Access•Walter Leal Filho, Leyre Echevarria Icaza et al.•ARTICLE•Architecture and the Built…•2018

The impacts of climate changes to cities, which are home to over half of the world ́s population, are already being felt. In many cases, the intensive speed with which urban centres have been growing means that little attention has been paid to the role played by climatic factors in maintaining the quality of life. Among the negative consequences of rapid city growth is the expansion of the problems posed by urban heat islands, defined as areas i…

  • Introducing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Malaysia

Angelina F Ambrose, Rajah Rasiah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This paper attempts to evaluate potential reductions in climate damage following the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Malaysia over the period 2015–2030. The simulation produced interesting results. While gross climate damage under the BAU scenario increased to RM7.1 billion in 2030, the commensurate damage under the slow, moderate and high hydrogen adaptation fell to MYR2.0 billion, MYR1.7 billion and MYR1.2 billion, respectively. …

  • Climate change mitigation projections for Asean

This article analyses climate mitigation impact once the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) introduce their respective Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) using dynamic non-linear computable general equilibrium modelling and 2010 input-output tables. The results indicate that atmospheric concentration of carbon and temperatures under the business as usual (BAU) scenario will fall from 390 PPM and 0.80°C respectively in …

  • An assessment of the causes and consequences of agricultural land abandonment in Europe

Walter Leal Filho, Merit Mandel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

The agriculture sector is the principal source of income for around 20% of the EU-26 population, which live in predominantly rural regions that would be devastated without its contribution. Moreover, the combined agricultural and food sector forms an important part of the EU economy, accounting for 15 million jobs (8.3% of total employment) and 4.4% of GDP. The 12 million active farmers across Europe today, have an average farm size of about 15 h…

This study empirically explores climate change-related impacts on rice farming by using global circulation models together with crop modelling. The approach uses a bottom-up strategy which focuses on agricultural production loss under various climatic conditions following observational records of precipitation and warming climatic factors up to the year 2090. The study provides a wide range of potential climate outcomes and assesses the comparati…
