  • Multifractal relationship between decomposed oil price shocks and trading volume

Open Access•Xunfa Lu, Huanhuan Yan et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

The decomposition of oil price shocks is crucial for understanding the multifractal nature of price-volume dynamics in crude oil futures. Using the structural vector autoregression (SVAR), this study decomposes the crude oil futures prices into three types of oil price shocks, viz., supply shocks, demand shocks, and risk shocks. The heterogeneous effects of decomposed oil price shocks on the trading volume of the crude oil futures are uncovered b…

  • Enhancing Financial Well-Being

    Open Access•Hardeep Singh Mundi, Nicholas Apergis•ARTICLE•International Social Science…•2025•References: 94

This study investigates the effectiveness of solution-focused financial therapy (SFFT) in improving financial well-being (FWB) among adults in India using an experimental design. A sample of 120 participants was randomly assigned to an intervention group (n = 60) and a control group (n = 60). The intervention group underwent a 6-week SFFT programme, whereas the control group received no intervention. FWB was measured pre- and post-intervention. R…

  • Does classification of green aid flows matter for environmental quality

Open Access•Nicholas Apergis, Mehmet Pinar et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2024

Climate change imposes an existential threat on the globe and has already had sizeable economic costs to countries. Environmental aid flows aim to alleviate the rising concerns of climate change in the developing world. Even though the existing literature has examined the effectiveness of green aid flows for reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the recipient countries, no existing study has examined the effectiveness of different classifications …

  • Pandemic, sentiments over Covid-19, and EU convergence

Open Access•Athanasios Anastasiou, Nicholas Apergis et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2024

This study examines the convergence/divergence of people's sentiments over Covid-19 in European economies and investigates the role of the support policies that were implemented by governments and central banks. The analysis focuses on 26 EU countries plus the UK, using changes in human mobility to essential places as a proxy for pessimistic/optimistic sentiments. Based on a panel-clustering methodology and multinomial logistic regressions, the r…

  • Does climate policy uncertainty affect tourism demand? Evidence from time-varying causality tests

Open Access•Nicholas Apergis, Konstantinos Gavriilidis et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2023

This study examines whether climate policy uncertainty affects the propensity of people to travel. To do so, we employ the Climate Policy Uncertainty (CPU) index and US air-travel data to eight regional overseas destinations for the period 2000–2019. Using time-varying causality tests to deal with the structural breaks that exist in the relationship between CPU and US air travel, we find that CPU is a major determinant of air-travel demand to all…

  • Corruption and partisan polarization

    Open Access•Nicholas Apergis, Mehmet Pinar•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2023

Recent work documents that even though partisan polarization may have detrimental economic and social outcomes, polarized societies lead to better governance and less corruption. However, the effect of corruption on partisan polarization has been mostly ignored by the literature. By using various measures of partisan polarization and corruption, this paper demonstrates that corrupt behaviours are associated with more partisan polarization in the …

  • The influence of economic policy uncertainty and geopolitical risk on US citizens overseas air passenger travel by regional destination

    Open Access•James E Payne, Nicholas Apergis•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2022

This research note extends the literature on the role of economic policy uncertainty and geopolitical risk on US citizens overseas air travel through the examination of the forecast error variance decomposition of total overseas air travel and by regional destination. Our empirical findings indicate that across regional destinations, US economic policy uncertainty explains more of the forecast error variance of US overseas air travel, followed by…

  • Regional unemployment and employee loyalty

    Nicholas Apergis, Yannis Georgellis•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2017•References: 15

This study investigates the relationship between unemployment and employee loyalty across UK regions. It is argued that higher regional unemployment depresses wages and increases the cost of a potential job loss, thus providing an incentive for employees to be loyal to their employer. Using data from the Work and Employment Relations Survey (WERS), the results confirm the positive association between regional unemployment and employee loyalty. A …

  • Explosive bubbles in the US–China exchange rate? Evidence from right-tailed unit root tests

Ghassen El Montasser, John Fry et al.•ARTICLE•China Economic Journal•2016•References: 7

In this article we apply novel right-tailed unit root (sup Augmented Dickey-Fuller (SADF) and generalized sup ADF) tests to the China–US exchange rate. The empirical results document that the recent financial crisis in 2008 may be preceded by early warning signs of exuberance. Using the SADF test, evidence of an explosive behavior in the nominal exchange is found from 2005 onwards. This period coincides with both financial reforms in China and ea…
