Celebrating Eighty Years of American Imago
Celebrating Eighty Years of American Imago Murray M. Schwartz Early last year, Anton Kris initiated a discussion between my predecessor, Louis Rose, and me about bringing American Imago back to its original American home in Boston. Hanns Sachs and Sigmund Freud had agreed in 1939 that the European Imago, begun in 1912, could find refuge from Nazi persecution here. Does the Center Hold? Reflections on a Sociological Core
Is there a distinct disciplinary core (or foundation of agreed on knowledge) in sociology? Should we define a core in our broad field to build consensus? If so, what should it look like? We address these questions by presenting three viewpoints that lean for and against identifying a core for department curricula, students, and the public face of sociology. First, “There really is not much, if any, core.” Second, sociology is “a habit of the mind…

The Effects of a High-carbohydrate, High-protein or Balanced Lunch upon Later Food Intake and Hunger Ratings
This study compared the satiating properties of three liquid lunches (450 kcal each), one dominant in protein (71.5% of energy), a second in carbohydrates (99% of energy) and a third containing an equal mixture of the first two formulations, in a within-subjects, repeated measures design. At an ad libitum dinner meal, 12 women consumed 31% more kilocalories in the high-carbohydrate lunch condition than in the high-protein lunch condition and 20% …

Monitoring ambulatory care: Impact of a surveillance program on clinical practice patterns in New York City
Administrative records of the Title XIX (Medicaid) Program of New York City were reviewed to determine the impact of a surveillance system introduced to monitor physician billing. Billing patterns of the physicians subject to program sanctions, as well as the larger universe of all participating New York City physicians, showed changes coincident with the introduction of the surveillance program: utilization of x-rays, lab tests, injections, and …
The Conflict Between Productivity and Creativity in Modern Day Physics
Professor Schwartz, with two associates at Columbia University, recently proved the existence of the second neutrino, a discovery of major significance to physics. In this article he discusses factors inhibiting creativity in physics, using for illus tration a case analogous to the actual historical sequence in research on the second neutrino. He emphasizes the dangers of "production line research
