Population Ageing and Economic Dependency in Thailand
While population ageing poses fiscal and dependency challenges for Thailand, conventional measures of population ageing may misrepresent future burdens by overlooking key societal changes under way.Given improvements in health and life expectancy which should slow down the pace of population ageing, this paper argues that the threshold of 'old age' (65+) should be redefined.Additionally, the analysis considers changes in labour force participatio…
Vietnam's Missing Female Births
The sex ratio at birth (SRB) imbalance, primarily resulting from sex-selective abortion, is considered one of the most pressing demographic issues in Vietnam, as denoted by persistent high SRB for more than two decades. The government's efforts are challenged by cultural, demographic, and socioeconomic diversity across geographical locations and sub-groups inside the country. For example, son preference is biased towards Northern Vietnam. This st…

Remarriage in Thailand
Thailand's marriage system has been undergoing a significant transformation. Past research has often focused on the declining marriage rates, delays in marital timing, and the rise in marital dissolution. Much less attention is paid to remarriage trends and consequences. Addressing this pertinent gap, we analyze multiple nationally representative surveys to examine recent trends, correlates, and potential implications of remarriage among Thai rep…
Gender differences in estimated excess mortality during the Covid-19 pandemic in Thailand
The findings indicate an overall presence of gender inequality in excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand, observed across age groups and regions. These findings highlight the need for further attention to be paid to gender disparities in mortality and call for targeted interventions to address these disparities
Poverty, noncommunicable diseases, and perceived health risks among older adults during the Covid ‐19 pandemic in urban Thailand
The COVID-19 pandemic has had negative impacts on vulnerable populations worldwide. This study aimed to examine the association between the health worries of urban older people in Thailand and covariates related to income and non-income poverty, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), and metabolic risk factors (MRFs). The study utilized the 2021 Survey on Housing and Support Services for Poor Older Adults, which sampled lower-income urban adults aged a…

Expansion of Thailand’s social pension policy and its implications for family support for older persons
Thailand is among the few developing countries that provide social pension for a significant majority of its older adults. In 2009, the government amended the Old‐Age Allowance (OAA) scheme from a means‐tested to a near‐universal social pension program. Analyzing nationally representative data from the Surveys of Older Persons in Thailand, we found significant changes over the last decade in the patterns of old‐age income sources and filial econo…
Cognitive function, co-residence, and social participation among older persons in Thailand
Cognitive function is likely to decline with age. Its decline or protection is associated with demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors. Social factors, including living arrangement and social participation, have been afforded less attention in the literature, especially in the context of developing countries in Asia. This study uses the 2016 Population Change and Well-Being in the Context of Ageing Societies survey to examine the a…
Smoking and Drinking Behaviors among Older Adults
Trajectories of Cognitive Ageing among Thai Later-Life Adults
People are living longer and functioning better than at the same age in prior decades, and those aged 60 years and older are often assumed to have similar levels of health and functioning to each other. This study analyzed health and social data from the 2016 Survey of Population Change and Well-being in the Context of Aging Society using the characteristics approach. This method determines variation in the speed of cognitive ageing - assessed th…
Parental status and psychological distress among older Thais
This study examines whether childless older Thais are more vulnerable to psychological distress relative to older adults with children. Drawing from the 2011 Survey of Older Persons in Thailand ( n = 37,936), zero‐inflated negative binomial regression methods examine psychological distress of childless older adults relative to coresident and noncoresident parents. Analyses further explore how gender and marital status moderate this relationship. …
Health prospects of older persons in Thailand
Thailand’s population is aging rapidly and the number of older adults suffering from health limitations is expected to increase. Making use of several rounds of the Survey of Older Persons, we look at the education-specific prevalences of three health indicators over time and find a positive education gradient for difficulties with ADLs and poor self-rated health, but not for functional limitations. Combining these age-, sex- and education-specif…

How do living arrangements and intergenerational support matter for psychological health of elderly parents? Evidence from Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand
What does living alone really mean for older persons? A comparative study of Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand
