The willingness to transition to a more plant-based diet among omnivores: Determinants and socioeconomic differences
Plant-based diets benefit individual health and the environment, yet most people eat omnivorous diets. We aim to (1) assess the role of multiple determinants for transitioning to more plant-based diets in a sample of omnivorous respondents, such as recommendations from doctors, scientists and politicians; lower costs; and increased availability, and to (2) identify which subpopulations are most receptive to which determinants. Using data from a s…
Division of labour in families: An Integrative Dyadic Classification Approach
The topic of household division of labour has generated a considerable body of empirical research focusing on identifying determinants that can explain why the allocation of tasks has been persistently gendered for decades. Against the backdrop of couples’ increasingly complex and diverse sociostructural compositions in modern Western societies, conceiving household division of labour as a heterogeneous and dyadic phenomenon is indispensable in u…
The role of generalized trust and control in the employment of domestic help - An experimental case study for Germany and the UK
This study analyses the role of generalized trust and control in households' employment of domestic help. Applying a basic trust game with uncertainty, we argue that households differ in their estimate of the proportion of opportunistic domestic workers, variation which we ascribe to generalized trust. Households with low trust should estimate a lower proportion of non-opportunistic individuals, making them less willing to accept a domestic worke…
Doing Housework in Context: Dyadic Analyses of the Division of Domestic Labor in Contemporary Couples
The persisting gendered division of domestic labor in Western societies remains puzzling. Beyond standard economic and normative explanations, more recent approaches emphasize affective, cognitive, and incorporated aspects of housework and the production, reproduction, and negotiation of gendered expectations via social interactions. However, the relevant indicators for these more implicit mechanisms are not routinely included in social surveys. …
Rethinking paid domestic services in modern societies – Experimental evidence on the effect of quality and professionalisation on service demand
Purpose Although essential to social welfare, unpaid domestic and care work is an increasingly scarce resource in modern societies. Despite the growing need, many households refrain from outsourcing their domestic chores to the market. Simultaneously, the household service sector is mostly characterised by low-qualification, informal jobs lacking quality and professional standards. Drawing on transaction cost theory, the present study aims to exa…
Social relations and employees' rejection of working from home: A social exchange perspective
Why do employees prefer working on‐site rather than working from home (WfH)? This article examines how personal concerns at the level of social relationships affect rejection of WfH. Using a large‐scale representative survey of employees in Germany ( N = 4448), we apply logistic regression analyses to examine, first, the association between employees' social relationships at work and rejection of WfH and, second, the moderating effects of social …
Nachhaltiger Lebensmittelkonsum.
Conflicts over the division of domestic work: A matter of gender-specific expectations and needs
This study investigates the frequency of conflicts over the division of domestic labor among heterosexual couples with dependent children ( N = 1597), considering the actual division of labor, perceived fairness about the division of labor, spouses' levels of general appreciation for one another, varying preferences for housework and housekeeping standards, and role expectations. By applying actor-partner interdependence models (APIMs) to data fr…
