Open Access•Alena Křížková, Clary Krekula et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2026

Introduction There are still knowledge gaps relating to the interaction between digitalization, organizational changes, and the aging of the workforce. This study examines the impact of digitalization on older workers in the financial sector in Sweden and the Czechia. The experience of digitalization by older workers in different countries and labor market sectors, and its fostering of insecurity and precarity through technostress, feelings of in…

  • Strong Gender Contract, Weak Institutions: Gender Pay Gap in Slovenia and Czechia

    Open Access•Alena Křížková, Aleksandra Kanjuo-Mrčela et al.•ARTICLE•Social Politics International…•2025•References: 18

This article investigates the dynamics of the gender pay gap (GPG) in two post-socialist economies, Czechia and Slovenia, during their capitalist transition and EU membership. Using regression analysis on large samples of linked employer–employee data to estimate the total GPG and within-job GPG and institutional analysis, we find that in both countries women earn significantly less than men for the same work. We interpret this as due to institut…

The article examines how technological change and organisational restructuring interacts with population ageing and policies that extend working life, and how older workers understand these trends. Using organisational and contextual approaches and qualitative research on nurses and bankers in Czechia, we investigate older workers' experiences with digitalisation. The age disadvantage older workers experience in digitalising workplaces is produce…

    Open Access•Radka Dudová, Alena Křížková•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 32

Using an intersectional approach, we explore how parents in the Czech Republic coped with the increased demands of childcare and how their perceptions of childcare changed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Building on Nancy Fraser's theory of the social contradiction of capitalism, we address the question of whether the pandemic situation can be viewed as an opportunity to increase recognition of care. Qualitative interviews with parents from var…

  • The Great Separation: Top Earner Segregation at Work in Advanced Capitalist Economies

    Olivier Godechot, D Tomaskovic-Devey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 74

Earnings segregation at work is an understudied topic in social science, despite the workplace being an everyday nexus for social mixing, cohesion, contact, claims making, and resource exchange. It is all the more urgent to study as workplaces, in the last decades, have undergone profound reorganizations that could affect the magnitude and evolution of earnings segregation. Analyzing linked employer-employee panel administrative databases, the au…

  • Ups and downs in finance, ups without downs in inequality

    Open Access•Olivier Godechot, Nils Neumann et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 30

The upswing in finance in recent decades has led to rising inequality, but do downswings in finance lead to a symmetric decline in inequality? We analyze the asymmetry of the effect of ups and downs in finance, and the effect of increased capital requirements and the bonus cap on national earnings inequality. We use administrative employer-employee-linked data from 1990 to 2019 for 12 countries and data from bank reports, from 2009 to 2017 in 13 …

The article focuses on how parents of school and younger children experienced school closures associated with the Covid-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic. Using an intersectional approach in qualitative research, we examine how parents coped with the increased demands of childcare and how their perception of childcare changed during the pandemic. More generally, we ask whether the pandemic situation was an opportunity for greater recognition and …

  • Equal Wage for Equal Work? Gender Wage Equality in Diverse Labour Market Contexts

    Open Access•Alena Křížková, Kristýna Pospíšilová•ARTICLE•Czech Sociological Review•2022•References: 11

Although international comparisons point to the gender pay gap (GPG) as a significant problem in the Czech labour market, until recently the GPG has not been the subject of deeper research or political attention. Using linked employer–employee data, the article answers the question of whether men and women were paid an equal wage for equal work in 2005–2020 and what part of the total GPG is caused by the segregation of women and men into differen…

  • Within-job gender pay inequality in 15 countries

    Open Access•Andrew M Penner, Trond Petersen et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2022•Cited by: 11•References: 9

Extant research on the gender pay gap suggests that men and women who do the same work for the same employer receive similar pay, so that processes sorting people into jobs are thought to account for the vast majority of the pay gap. Data that can identify women and men who do the same work for the same employer are rare, and research informing this crucial aspect of gender differences in pay is several decades old and from a limited number of co…

Research on women’s entrepreneurship often fails to uncover the gendered way in which women’s roles and responsibilities are portrayed and it neglects the connections between ideas about what roles women play in business and in the family and the social context in which these ideas are embedded. This article focuses on the gender inequalities that are reflected in the construction of men’s and women’s roles and responsibilities in copreneurships …

The authors analyse these dimensions using data from two representative sociological surveys. 1) The right to be a parent (to ca…

  • Czech Parents Under Lockdown: Different Positions, Different Temporalities

Using organisational and contextual approaches and qualitative research on nurses and bankers in Czechia, we investigate older workers' experiences with digitalisation. The age disadvantage older workers experience in digitalising workplaces is produce…
