  • Anticipatory Dying: Reflections Upon End of Life Experiences in a Thai Buddhist Hospice

    Open Access•Bruce L Arnold•ARTICLE•Qualitative Sociology Review•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Death and dying offer an important paradox for investigation. Both are feared and to be avoided but also generate considerable reverence, curiosity and mystery. The latter is investigated through thick ethnographic data collected in a Thai Buddhist hospice and the following pages provide some description of an alternative cultural-spiritual framing of anticipating death. The former part of this paradox is explored using detailed autoethnographic-…

  • Early Transition Stages and Heterogeneity in Criminal Careers among Young Offenders

    Open Access•Bruce L Arnold, Fiona M Kay•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 21

  • Self‐regulatory responses to professional misconduct within the legal profession

    Open Access•Bruce L Arnold, J Hagan•ARTICLE•Canadian Review of Sociology/Revue…•1994•References: 13

  • Careers of Misconduct: The Structure of Prosecuted Professional Deviance Among Lawyers

    Bruce L Arnold, J Hagan•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1992•Cited by: 11•References: 8

We develop a career model of prosecuted misconduct among lawyers. This model combines labeling theory's emphasis on the role of sanctions in structuring deviant careers with a focus on the asynchronic interaction between life cycle changes among precariously positioned actors and system conditions. This conceptualization suggests that complaints of misconduct against inexperienced solo practitioners are more prone to prosecution because of social…

  • Cultural Capital, Gender, and the Structural Transformation of Legal Practice

    Open Access•J Hagan, Marjorie S Zatz et al.•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•1991•Cited by: 21•References: 16

In this article we clarify and modify Marxian and postindustrial predictions about the structural transformation of the legal profession, especially as they relate to gender differences in the law firm. In doing so, we utilize the concept of cultural capital and highlight the changing gender stratification of legal practice. We find that there is a growing centralization and concentration of cultural capital in law firms, so that both men and wom…
