Slavery, Family and Childhood in the Portuguese Diaspora in Southeast Asia, 16th-17th Centuries
The Portuguese communities in Asia were mainly concerned with maritime commerce, which required long periods on board. The families of most of these merchants resided on land, in cities such as Goa, Cochin, Malacca and Macao, and included numerous slaves of different geographical origins and ethnicities, also characterized by their young ages. This article examines the presence of enslaved children and youths in Portuguese last wills, which have …

Entangled Inheritances: Confraternities as Ritual Heirs. Some Examples from the Misericórdia of Porto (16th-17th Centuries)
In the Portuguese inheritance system only kin in vertical line were mandatory heirs, thus creating a pool of heirless testators who could dispose freely of their assets. Not only the institutions of the Catholic Church benefitted from them, but also confraternities such as the Misericórdias received property in exchange for salvific rituals such as masses for their souls or charity to the poor. The analysis of single case studies from the Miseric…
Mounted Coconuts, Bezoars, Slaves, and Chinese Porcelain: The Material Culture of the Donors of the Misericórdia of Porto (1500–1640)
Managing Social Inequality: Confraternal Charity in Portugal and Its Overseas Colonies
When the first misericórdia was created in 1498, Lisbon was trying to erase the wounds of the violent expulsion of the Jewish communities from the kingdom, and the confraternity was born under the concern of reuniting baptized persons who wanted to exercise charity. The misericórdias were soon to be founded all over the kingdom and its empire, acting as prebanking institutions and rivaling with local institutions like the municipality or the bish…
Family and Empire: Pantaleão Ferreira and His Heirs in Sixteenth-Century Portugal
Emigration overseas offered new career possibilities for the sons of elite families in the city of Porto, Portugal, although girls increasingly entered convents. This work explores the case of Pantaleão Ferreira, a man of recent noble status, and how his life and the lives of his family members were affected by the availability of new territories provided by the Iberian Empires during the sixteenth century. The lives of the members of the Ferreir…
Knightly Masculinity, Court Games and Material Culture in Late‐medieval Portugal: The Case of Constable Afonso ( c .1480–1504)
This article explores the ways in which gender was used in order to transform an exiled and uneducated illegitimate child into a prince. Our study revolves around a member of the royal family, Afonso ( c .1480–1504), who was brought up in hiding by peasants and who later, as a teenager, was reincorporated into the court. We argue that the keys to this process of rehabilitation were, on one hand, family politics centred around different configurat…
Sugar and spices in Portuguese Renaissance medicine
The history of medicine in late fifteenth and sixteenth-century Portugal cannot be dissociated from the evolution of the monarchy and overseas expansion. Kings and queens were responsible for changes in the institutional structures of charity, creating new hospitals (especially Nossa Senhora do Pópulo in Caldas and Todos-os-Santos in Lisbon) and a new set of confraternities—the Misericórdias—that would take charge of most hospitals in the kingdom…
Le saint sacrifice de la marche: Pieds, Charité Et Statut Social Dans Les Confréries Portugaises À L’époque Moderne
In 16 th -century Portugal, owning a horse was still a crucial requirement to attain the status of noble. Throughout the Early Modern Period, to walk was a sign of social disqualification, except in certain rituals at court where participants were required to stand. Above all, confraternal rituals required nobles to be on foot as a symbol of charity; they had to walk or stand while visiting the deserving poor or taking part in processions, funera…

New Haven: Yale University Press, 2013. Pp. 433. In general, the study of royal mistresses is undertaken separately from that of queens, but that approach, as Kathleen Wellman’s book demonstrates, has the inconvenience of separating the part from the whole, ignoring the relationships…

Charity and Discrimination: The Misericórdia of Goa
Domination is not hegemony, and no stable colonial system can survive on the basis of permanent physical violence over the local populations; a fiction of generosity has to be installed in order to create a bond between the rulers and the ruled. In order to establish a rhetoric based on disinterested giving, colonial powers had to make available to the colonised populations some “benefits” that could be claimed as being advantageous for the recip…

Child abandonment in Portugal: Legislation and institutional care
