On‐the‐job training: A skill match approach to the determinants of lifelong learning
A recurrent finding in on‐the‐job training research is the ‘training gap’ in formal training: the positive correlation between initial education and continuing training. This finding is here examined from the perspective of two important distinctions: (i) between employee skill supply and job skill demand and (ii) between formal and informal training. Less‐educated workers may hold jobs with low skill requirements demanding little further formal …
Class Clues
Despite recurrent controversy, class theory remains the major sociological explanation of social inequality. While there are several approaches to class theory, one particular model has achieved dominance in empirical research over the last decades: the EGP (or Goldthorpe) class schema. In this article, the theoretical foundations of this model are tested empirically on the basis of unique Swedish data on employment relations. The outcome of the …
Youth employment decline and the structural change of skill
Labor market prospects for youth have deteriorated significantly in many OECD countries over recent decades. While the extent and consequences of falling youth employment are commonly studied, attempts at understanding its causes have been much more limited. The present paper attempts to fill this explanatory gap. We suggest that the secular decline in youth employment can be accounted for by the structural change of skill. This process of struct…
Work in Sweden 1974–2010: Work-life inequality at the intersection of class and gender
This article traces work-life evolution in Sweden during recent decades against the backdrop of long-run structural change tied to class and gender. We examine the development of four key labor market features: (a) occupational sex segregation, (b) gender gaps in job quality, (c) skill upgrading and mismatch, and (d) youth employment. While occupational and educational upgrading is beneficial for most people, some groups face waning work-life pro…
Skills and Wages in European Labour Markets: Structure and Change
This chapter presents an empirical analysis of structure and change in skills and wages in five European countries: Germany, Spain, France, Great Britain, and Sweden. The discussion begins with an overview of previous research in three interrelated fields of relevance for the empirical analyses: (a) the structure and change of skill demand in Western Europe and the United States; (b) the connections between social class and skills; and (c) intern…

Collectivist versus Individualist Mobility Regimes? Structural Change and Job Mobility in Four Countries
Job mobility is produced by structural forces of expansion and contraction as well as by individual choices. But labor market structure and welfare state policies will create distinctive national patterns of labor force adjustment to shifts in technology, markets, and the consequent demand for particular forms of labor. In a four‐nation comparative study, U.S. rates of job mobility showed the greatest sensitivity to structural change and to the l…
Organizational Structures and Job Rewards in Sweden
In this article, we examine how the organizational structure affects workers' job autonomy and earnings in Sweden. The analysis is based on survey data from a probability sample of Swedish employees and their work organizations. Four aspects of the organizational structure are studied: establishment size, hierarchical structure, firm internal labour market arrangements, and formalization of work routines. Our results indicate that the structural …
