The (mis)conception of average Quaternary conditions
The concept of Quaternary average conditions has gained popularity over the past few decades, especially with studies of long-term landscape evolution. In this paper, we critically assess this concept by analyzing the marine isotope record (LR04 δ 18 O stack) relative to the Quaternary. This shows that the frequency and amplitude of climate glacial-interglacial cycles are not constant throughout the Quaternary, with a clear change during the Midd…
Pushing the Limits
This paper presents two high-resolution pollen records dating to ∼AD 1000–1400 that reveal the impacts of Norse colonists on vegetation and landscape around a remote farmstead in the Western Settlement of Greenland. The study is centred upon a ‘centralised farm’ (ruin group V53d) in Austmannadalen, near the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet (64°13′N, 49°49′W). The climate is low arctic and considered marginal in terms of its suitability for the t…
Glacio-archaeological evidence of permanent settlements within a glacier end moraine complex during 980-1840 AD
Manual mapping of drumlins in synthetic landscapes to assess operator effectiveness
Mapped topographic features are important for understanding processes that sculpt the Earth's surface. This paper presents maps that are the primary product of an exercise that brought together 27 researchers with an interest in landform mapping wherein the efficacy and causes of variation in mapping were tested using novel synthetic DEMs containing drumlins. The variation between interpreters (e.g. mapping philosophy, experience) and across the …
An updated moraine map of Far NE Russia
Barr and Clark published a series of maps depicting the distribution of end moraines across Far NE Russia. These moraines outlined the former distribution and dimensions of glaciers, and were identified through the analysis of Landsat ETM+ satellite images (15- and 30-m resolution). Now, a number of freely available digital elevation model (DEM) datasets are available, which cover the entire ∼4 million km2 of Far NE Russia. These include the 30-m…
Distribution and pattern of moraines in Far NE Russia reveal former glacial extent
Please click here to download the map associated with this article. Here we present a series of six maps illustrating the distribution of end moraines in Far NE Russia. The maps are the first to systematically document the distribution of moraines across this region from the Verkhoyansk Mountains at the westernmost limit of our study area to the Chukchi Peninsula in the NE and to Kamchatka in the south, covering almost 4 million km2. Moraines wer…
