Sex Segregation and Glass Ceilings: A Comparative Statics Model of Women's Career Opportunities in the Federal Government over a Quarter Century
A comparative statics model is utilized to examine mechanisms of gender inequality: gender distribution (skew), gender segregation (composition), occupational captivity, hierarchical ceilings, glass ceilings, and internal labor market (ILM) structure/network linkages. The analysis examines new linkages between sex segregation and glass ceilings; two elements of sex segregation–composition and captivity; and two elements of glass ceilings–pathways…
Organizational Demography
Organizational demography may be conveniently broken into four areas of theoretical development: intraorganizational demography, interorganizational demography, individual careers, and organizational and external populations. The bulk of the work has been conducted in the first three areas and deals with turnover of both personnel and jobs; growth, decline and stability; opportunity structures; and performance and policy. As for the latter, there…
Careers and Organizational Labor Markets: Demographic Models of Organizational Behavior
It is commonly held that an individual's career prospects decline the higher he or she rises in an organization. In many cases this is not true; this paper identifies four organizational microstructures and two triggering mechanisms that provide clues for assessing one's career prospects in different organizations. The four microstructures are grade ratios, vacancy chains, managerial selection preferences, and cohort size. Growth and exit rates a…

A class of Markov models of social mobility with duration memory patterns
This paper proposes a class of Markov models of social mobility with duration memory. Several new duration memory structures as well as existing models, such as the Cornell model, are shown to be special cases of the general model. The model is also extended to heterogeneous populations thereby permitting age specific variants. Alternative axioms to cumulative inertia are included, pointing to new possibilities for duration specific modeling such…
Markov models of occupational mobility: Theoretical development and empirical support. Part 2: Continuously operative job systems
This paper, consisting of two parts, presents an analysis of the current state of Markov model building for intragenerational occupational mobility. Part 1 examined models of careers; Part 2 analyzes models of continuously operative job systems. In Part 2 we find considerable predictive power for the simple MC model of personnel flows and the job vacancy chain model. Major analytical work has extended in two primary directions: the theoretical co…
Markov models of occupational mobility: Theoretical development and empirical support. Part 1: Careers
This paper, consisting of two parts, presents an analysis of the current state of Markov model , building for intragenerational occupational mobility. Part One examines theories of careers and Part Two theories of continuously operative job systems. Stress is given to the empirical support of the models and to the cumulative development of theory. Among the paper's findings are that several models proposed to span both occupational and geographic…
An application of job vacancy chain model to a civil service internal labor market
This paper has three primary foci—a conceptualization of occupational mobility having system boundary properties and interrelated moves, tests of the job vacancy chain model to determine its predictive power for a civil service internal labor market, and additional use of the theory of absorbing Markov chains to gain further insight into the dynamics of job vacancies. The modes by which job vacancy chains entered the system by stratum are also ex…
Two Markov Models of Open System Occupational Mobility: Underlying Conceptualizations and Empirical Tests
The principal purposes of this paper are to introduce a more general area of application for a refreshing approach to occupational mobility (open systems), to illustrate the general open system approach with two currently existing alternative models including an explication of the two models' distinct representations of the process and to test each model's predictive accuracy for a given job system. The approach focuses on intragenerational occup…
