  • One thousand seven hundred years of interaction between glacial activity and flood frequency in proglacial Lake Muzelle (western French Alps)

Open Access•Laurent Fouinat, Paul Sabatier et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

Local glacial fluctuations and flood occurrences were investigated in the sediment sequence of proglacial Lake Muzelle. Based on geochemical analysis and organic matter content established using loss on ignition and reflectance spectroscopy, we identified six periods of increased glacial activity over the last 1700 yr. Each is in accordance with records from reference glaciers in the Alps. A total of 255 graded layers were identified and interpre…

  • Soils of Mountainous Landscapes

    Open Access•M Egli, Jérôme Poulenard•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2016

Unlike many other soils, mountain soils often are subjected to strong hillslope processes that distinctly affect their properties. At unstable sites, erosion and other mass movements lead to a continuous rejuvenation of the soil. Under such circumstances weathering rates are kept at high levels, as new parent material is intermittently exposed, leading to the development of a shallow soil cover. Mountain soils are highly dynamic systems that may …

  • Erosion record in Lake La Thuile sediments (Prealps, France)

    Open Access•Manon Bajard, Paul Sabatier et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•Cited by: 10•References: 12

Lake La Thuile, in the Northern French Prealps (874 m a.s.l.), provides an 18-m long sedimentary sequence spanning the entire Lateglacial/Holocene period. The high-resolution multi-proxy (sedimentological, palynological, and geochemical) analysis of the uppermost 6.2 m reveals the Holocene dynamics of erosion in the catchment in response to landscape modifications. The mountain belt is at relevant altitude to study past human activities, and the …

  • Non-reversible geosystem destabilisation at 4200 cal. BP

    Open Access•E Brisset, Cécile Miramont et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 14

A 144-cm-long core was obtained in Lake Petit (2200 m a.s.l., Mediterranean French Alps) in order to reconstruct past interactions between humans, the environment and the climate over the last five millennia using a multidisciplinary approach involving sedimentological, geochemical and botanical analyses. We show a complex pattern of environmental transformation. From 4800 to 4200 cal. BP, podzol-type soils progressively developed under forest co…

  • Frequency and intensity of high-altitude floods over the last 3.5 ka in northwestern French Alps (Lake Anterne)

    Open Access•Charline Giguet-Covex, Fabien Arnaud et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

In central Western Europe, several studies have shown that colder Holocene periods, such as the Little Ice Age, also correspond to wet periods. However, in mountain areas which are highly sensitive to erosion processes and where precipitation events can be localized, past evolution of hydrological activity might be more complicated. To assess these past hydrological changes, a paleolimnological approach was applied on a 13.4-m-long sediment core …

  • Changes in erosion patterns during the Holocene in a currently treeless subalpine catchment inferred from lake sediment geochemistry (Lake Anterne, 2063 m a.s.l., NW French Alps)

    Open Access•Charline Giguet-Covex, Fabien Arnaud et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011

A high-resolution sedimentological and geochemical study was performed on a 20 m long core from the alpine Lake Anterne (2063 m a.s.l., NW French Alps) spanning the last 10 ka. Sedimentation is mainly of minerogenic origin. The organic matter quantity (TOC%) as well as its quality (hydrogen (HI) and oxygen (OI) indices) both indicate the progressive onset and subsequent stabilization of vegetation cover in the catchment from 9950 to 5550 cal. BP.…

  • Quito face à un risque d'origine naturelle

    Open Access•Jean-Louis Perrin, Jean‐Louis Perrin et al.•ARTICLE•Revue de géographie alpine•2000•Cited by: 1

The 31st of March 1997 a debris flow seriously affected the quebrada La Comunidad and. Morpho-hydro-climatic studies done after this event showed that extreme rainfall storms was the main factor to explain these phenomenons, it is evident that the morphology of the catchment, and particularly the longitudinal profile, played a fundamental part in the generation of debris flows. These events seem preferentially take place in the small catchments, …
