  • Divergent sensitivity of primary producers and benthic invertebrates to hydrological alteration in floodplain lakes

  • Diatoms in a sediment core from a flood pulse wetland in Malaysia record strong responses to human impacts and hydro‐climate over the past 150 years

Open Access•Charlotte Briddon, Suzanne Mcgowan et al.•ARTICLE•Geo Geography and Environment•2020•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

Rapid development and climate change in southeast Asia is placing unprecedented pressures on freshwater ecosystems, but long term records of the ecological consequences are rare. Here we examine one basin of Tasik Chini (Malaysia), a UNESCO‐designated flood pulse wetland, where human disturbances (dam installation, iron ore mining, oil palm and rubber cultivation) have escalated since the 1980s. Diatom analysis and organic matter geochemistry (δ …

  • Ecosystem shifts at two mid-Holocene tipping points in the alpine Lake Son Kol (Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia)

    Open Access•Andreas Laug, Anja Schwarz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 14

Tipping points can be defined as critical ecosystem thresholds that start self-enforced dynamics pushing systems into new stable states. Many lake ecosystems of arid Central Asia are sensitive to hydrological changes as they are located at the intersection of the influence of the dry Siberian Anticyclone and the relatively humid mid-latitude Westerlies, and their sediment records can be used to study past tipping points. We studied subfossil chir…

  • Centennial-scale lake-level lowstand at Lake Uddelermeer (The Netherlands) indicates changes in moisture source region prior to the 2.8-kyr event

    Open Access•Stefan Engel, S Engels et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016

The Uddelermeer is a unique lake for The Netherlands, containing a sediment record that continuously registered environmental and climatic change from the late Pleistocene on to the present. A 15.6-m-long sediment record was retrieved from the deepest part of the sedimentary basin and an age–depth model was developed using radiocarbon dating, 210 Pb dating, and Bayesian modeling. Lake-level change was reconstructed using a novel combination of hi…

  • Calibrating aquatic microfossil proxies with regression-tree ensembles

    Open Access•J Sakari Salonen, Adrian J Verster et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Referencias: 5

We examine the ability of four different regression-tree ensemble techniques (bagging, random forest, rotation forest and boosted tree) in calibration of aquatic microfossil proxies. The methods are tested with six chironomid and diatom datasets, using a variety of cross-validation schemes. We find random forest, rotation forest and the boosted tree to have a similar performance, while bagging performs less well and in several cases has trouble p…

  • Bog burst in the eastern Netherlands triggered by the 2.8 kyr BP climate event

    Open Access•Bas Van Geel, Henk Heijnis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 9

The nature and cause of the so-called 2.8 kyr BP event have been a subject of much debate. Peat sequences have provided much of the evidence for this event, but the process link between climate and peatland response is not well understood. Multiproxy, high-resolution analysis of a core from Bargerveen in the eastern Netherlands based on pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, testate amoebae and geochemistry identified an abrupt shift from relatively dr…

  • Roman impact on the landscape near castellum Fectio, The Netherlands

  • The influence of environmental changes on local and regional vegetation patterns at Rieme (NW Belgium)

    Open Access•Johanna A A Bos, Frederike Verbruggen et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2012•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 20
