Advancements and Applications of Finite Element Methods (FEM) and Laser Scanning Documentation (LSD)
This paper presents a systematic literature review on advancements and applications of Finite Element Methods (FEM) and Laser Scanning Documentation (LSD) in Cultural Heritage Management. FEM is a numerical technique widely used in engineering and scientific disciplines for solving complex problems by dividing them into smaller, more manageable elements. LSD is a method for capturing and digitizing real-world objects and environments using laser …
Foodways, Plant Management and Environment in the Western Roman Provinces
Past grapes, present insights
The cultivation and uses of Vitis vinifera L. (grapevine) during the Roman period are known from both ancient sources and archaeobotany, in which various methods have been used to distinguish between wild and domesticated subspecies. The present analysis uses Geometric Modern Morphometrics (GMM), taking as a case study the Roman town of Iesso (modern Guissona, Catalonia, Spain) to shed new light to these issues. Five wells dated from the first ce…
Tracing culinary practices in the western provinces of the Roman Empire using Organic Residue Analysis
This study aims at reconstructing foodways in the north-east (NE) of the Iberian Peninsula, focusing on lipid residue analysis of utilitarian vessels and using as case studies the sites of Puig Castellar of Biosca (180-120 BCE) and Guissona (120 BCE-third century CE). In total, fifty vessel fragments of different types and origins were analysed with techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-combustion-…
The Roman Republican castellum of Puig Castellar (Biosca)
This paper illustrates the results of research carried out at the archaeological site of Puig Castellar de Biosca (Catalonia, Spain), located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. This Republican military fortress, a castellum, is exceptional due both to its early chronology, which ranges between 180 and 120 BCE, and to the fact that it acted as a long-lasting military installation situated in a pacified area on the periphery of the Celtiber…
