Dating grave no. 97 from Vălcani in the light of numismatic and radiocarbon research – contributions to the chronology of H.1
New data on the Avar Period chronology of the Körös–Tisza–Maros Interfluve
The study presents an analysis of the internal chronology of Szarvas-Grexa-téglagyár and Székkutas-Kápolnadűlő, two Avar cemeteries in the Trans-Tisza Region. According to a widely accepted theory, both were established only in the second half of the Avar Period. This dating could be re-evaluated based on the radiocarbon results presented here. The question of when the Middle Avar belt sets could have appeared in the region is also addressed in t…
Chronological problems of the 7th–10th-century AD Carpathian Basin in light of radiocarbon data
The study presents the evaluation of a radiocarbon series, currently unparalleled in the research of the early medieval Carpathian Basin, which comprises data from the 7th to the 10th century AD. We provide a data set that, when combined with the radiocarbon data available in the related literature, covers the period in focus. The results of its analysis can be considered novel in several respects: 1) the radiocarbon data sequence and the relativ…
The early medieval origins of copper ore extraction in the Carpathian Mountains
The case study addresses the question of the early medieval revival of copper production in Europe. The focus of the research area is the Carpathian Basin, located on the eastern periphery of the zone influenced by European early medieval processes. The research of where and when early medieval metal production started in the region in our case also provides answers to the question of how the region was linked to the European continental economic…

A korábbi csoport erősebb avar …
Dietary and cultural differences between neighbouring communities
Stable isotope (δ15N, δ13C) and 14C results from two early medieval cemeteries are presented and evaluated in this study in order to draw conclusions about diet, social differentiation and chronology in the Carpathian Basin during the Avar period (7th–9th century CE). At Tiszafüred and Hortobágy, two contemporaneous but distinct groups buried their deceased. The results reflect basic diet deviations between the two communities, which originated i…
Jahrhundert n. Chr.)
The present paper analyses the precious metal artefacts, scarcely known in the huge archaeological material of the “late Avar period” (eighth to early ninth centuries AD). Unlike in the previous era the majority of the gold and silver objects of the late Avar period are stray finds; in particular high-quality goldsmith's artefacts are absent in the grave assemblages of the eighth century. The significance of precious metal objects in grave assemb…
A (Needle) Case in Point
In the late Avar period (eighth to ninth century ad ), vast quantities of utilitarian artefacts were produced in series in the Carpathian Basin, a phenomenon not seen since the end of the Roman period. The distribution of these articles reflects not only the region's settlement pattern, but also how these artefacts were disseminated. The communication network in the Carpathian Basin underwent a significant transformation between the early and lat…
The problem of “structural integration”. A case study of the 9th‒10th century burials (Graves 49 and 50) at Hortobágy – Árkus

Hyperostosis frontalis interna in ancient populations from the Carpathian Basin – A possible relationship between lifestyle and risk of development
The ‘Late Avar reform’ and the ‘long eighth century’
Research on late antique and early medieval economic and social processes during the past three decades called for, and enabled, a fresh look at the history of the ‘Late Avar period’ of the Carpathian Basin, corresponding exactly to the ‘long eighth century’ of the Mediterranean and European world. This paper offers a rather sketchy new model, alongside raising questions and framing a research programme focusing on social and economic historical …

The present study discusses a single buckle type, namely the variant that has the loop and plate cast in one and is provided with an attachment spike, representing a separate technological group within consciously employed forms. Assigned to the heraldic style in the Martinovka group, these buckles enjoyed a long use. The distribution and chronology of this buckle type shed light on the cultural contacts between the territories (cultural peripher…
Archaeometrical studies on some bronze buckles with portable (Handheld) XRF spectroscopy
Portable handheld X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (pXRF) is very effective and widely used technique for chemical analysis in field of archaeometry. The most advantageous feature of this technique is the possibility of analysing objects, artefacts on the spot without any sample-taking. In this study raw materials of 31 buckles from 7 th century AD made of various kinds of bronze and silver alloys were analyzed to check similarities or differences…
Kulturális összeolvadás a „középavar korban”. A Vác-Kavicsbányai temető
t\t\t\tThe cemetery at Vác-Kavicsbánya was used by two communities characterised by differing material cultures and cultural contacts from the mid-7th century onward. The later phase of the cemetery’s use attests to a process of cultural blending. The archaeological record enables the reconstruction of how the earlier local community lost its identity and of the process leading to the emergence of the new, Late Avar culture. \n\t\t\t | \n\t\t\t\t…
Antique meaning — Avar significance complex iconographic schemes on early medieval small objects
The goal of the study is to interpret the iconographic schemes of the decorative art of the Carpathian Basin in the early 8th century. The Late Avar animal style is based both on its own pictorial sources and on earlier (that arrived in the Carpathian Basin in the 7th century) and contemporary Mediterranean ones. A Mediterranean trend of the same ornamental topics as the Late Avar animal style can be supposed behind the adapted contemporary Medit…
Vegetal ornaments in the Late Avar decorative art
of PhD thesis submitted in 2013 to the Archaeology Doctoral Programme, Doctoral School of History, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest under the supervision of Tivadar Vida. This paper is the modified version of the abstract of my doctoral thesis.
The paper discusses the system of late Avar bronze casting workshops of the Carpathian Basin, their specialisation and the problems of the distribution of bronze objects. Comparing the strong specialisation, which seems certain also from the experiences of practical archaeology, with the strong probability that most of the late Avar casts were re-moulded, the extensive attitude of the Avar period workshop practice becomes conspicuous. The lack of…
