  • Wind from the South? Mace head from Surowica in the light of formal and metallurgical analysis

    Open Access•Arkadiusz Michalak, Piotr Kotowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2024•References: 3

A mace head with a socket was incidentally discovered in 2020 in the locality of Surowica in the Podkarpackien Voivodeship. On the basis of analogies, it can be dated to the 14th century. These analogies also indicated that the artefact was in all probability manufactured in the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary. Metallurgical analyses demonstrated that the mace head was cast of copper with natural admixtures by using the lost wax method. Regre…

  • Most recent discoveries on Roman period settlement sites in the upper San River basin

Open Access•Jan Bulas, Marcin Glinianowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Recherches Archéologique Nouvelle…•2022

Recent years have seen a significant increase in the amount of archaeological material from the younger sections of the Roman period found in the upper San basin. This is due to both the dynamic development of road and gas transmission infrastructure, and the development of private single-family housing. The new discoveries considerably expand the existing knowledge and provide new data for studies on settlement in the vicinity of Sanok during th…

Na mieczu znajdują się trzy znaki: w pobliżu nasady trzpienia wybito puncą znak kowalski w kształcie litery S, umieszczonej we wklęsłym polu, a po obu s…

  • New Rulers, New Rules? Changes in Military Equipment during the 13th and 14th Centuries in the Area of the Sanok Land

    Open Access•Piotr Kotowicz, Paweł Skowroński•ARTICLE•Fasciculi Archaeologiae Historicae•2020

In early Spring 1340 Jurij Bolesaw II Trojdenovych the last ruler of Halych-Volhynia Principality died of poisoning. This fact was of tremendous significance for the further history of this West Ruthenian Duchy. Due to succession pacts, claims to his territory were raised on the one hand by Casimir the Great, King of Poland (supported by Hungary) and on the other, by the Lithuanian Duke Liubartas. This conflict was resolved by force of arms over …

  • A Late-Roman solidus found at Prełuki (the Upper San River basin)

Open Access•Jarosław Bodzek, Robert Fedyk et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Carpathica•2019

The aim of the article is to publish and discuss the late Roman solidus of Theodosius II (408-450), found in 2018 in the vicinity of the village of Prełuki, Komańcza commune, Sanok County. The coin was found randomly by treasure hunters, eventually recovered and donated to the Historical Museum of Sanok by Robert Fedyk. It is the second find of a late Roman solidus in the Upper San River basin. Several years ago a solidus of Valentinian III (425-…

  • Dwa celtyckie depozyty przedmiotów żelaznych z Pakoszówki, pow. sanocki

Polska Instytut Archeologii Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego, Tomasz Bochnak et al.•ARTICLE•Materiały i Sprawozdania…•2016

In 2015, in Pakoszówka (Sanok distr., South-Eastern Poland) two La Tčne culture hoards of iron items were discovered. The similar finds – which had probably votive character? – are most common in the basin of the Upper and Middle Danube and at the left bank of Rhine – in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Germany. The first hoard included a plough, a scythe, two adzes, a socketed axe and the Dürrnberg type knife; the second deposit consisted of four si…

  • Bruchstücke von zwei keltischen Hohlbuckelringen aus Pakoszówka, Kr. Sanok, im Südosten Polens

Tomasz Bochnak, Piotr Kotowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Materiały i Sprawozdania…•2015

At the beginning of 2015, in Pakoszówka, dist. Sanok, 10 fragments of two Celtic bronze shin guards were found – female legs ornaments made of empty hemispheres. These artefacts need to be affiliated to the type BR-F3A according to J. Bujny, dated to the LT B2/C1 and LT C1a phases. Unfortunately, at present it is impossible to determine whether the items from Pakoszówka were originally a part of grave goods or a deposit of fragmented ornaments

  • Na tropie spektakularnej omyłki. Nowe spojrzenie na toporek z „napisem” z Ostrowa Tumskiego w Poznaniu

    Open Access•Piotr Kotowicz, Piotr N Kotowicz•ARTICLE•Acta Universitatis Lodziensis…•2012

During excavations conducted by Witold Hensel and Jan Żak in 1951 in the capitular garden on Ostrów Tumski in Poznań the researchers discovered a small (8,1 cm long) axehead (ryc. 1), whose surface bore a set of cuts forming an „inscription”. This discovery was named as an archaeological sensation. Despite the fact that it was found in a layer dated to the modern period, it was identified, based on some analogies, as belonging to the 10th–11thc. A…
