  • Philosophy and Platonism in Fronto’s Correspondence

Open Access•Lorenzo Costantini, Leonardo Costantini•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Institute of…•2023

This chapter focuses on the references and allusions to Plato in Fronto’s epistolary corpus, especially in his correspondence with Marcus Aurelius, to whom Fronto taught rhetoric. Attention will be paid to Fronto’s engagement with philosophy and his high esteem for Plato and (Middle) Platonism: Plato symbolizes the perfect synthesis between philosophy and rhetoric, which Fronto measures against the fallacy of Stoic dialectic, and Platonic element…

  • The Divine Plato’: Philosophy and literature in the Second Sophistic

Open Access•Ben Cartlidge, Lorenzo Costantini et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the Institute of…•2023

The afterlife of Plato scarcely needs introduction: not only is he one of the most widely studied figures in antiquity (in both scholarly and ‘popular’ contexts), but the ‘afterlife’ of classical authors has become an overwhelming scholarly passion in the discipline as a whole. The label ‘Platonist’, associated with a range of views to do with the existence of abstract objects, is still in current use. But Plato’s work inspires a range of respons…

  • Revisiting Apuleius’ De re publica (Fulgentius, Expositio sermonum antiquorum 44)

    Open Access•Lorenzo Costantini•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•2023•References: 8

This study focuses on a fragment of Apuleius’ lost De re publica preserved in Fulgentius, Expositio sermonum antiquorum 44. After reviewing earlier scholarship on this passage, it is argued that its Plautine vocabulary is consistent with Apuleius’ archaising style, far from being evidence against Apuleius’ paternity. An echo of Aristophanes, Knights 542 is discussed (a tag that later became a political adage), as well as of Plato, Republic 488a-4…

    Open Access•Agata Lunardini, Giuseppina Carta et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Insects found in archeological contexts provide useful information for reconstructing past events. In the context of funerary archeology, insects may help in reconstructing funerary practices or rituals, and in the understanding of the taphonomic processes. Furthermore, studying these insects is fundamental for developing effective conservation strategies for cultural heritage. This article focuses on the entomological investigation of four mummi…

  • Pseudo-Apuleius’ De Fato

  • The People as a Collective Character in the Story of the Widow of Ephesus (Petronius, Satyrica 111-112)

    Lorenzo Costantini, Leonardo Costantini•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•2019•References: 9

This study offers an interpretation of the people as a collective character in Petronius’ novella of the widow of Ephesus. Through discussing the importance of their role within the economy of the story, it becomes clear that the traditional Roman values they praise become progressively opposed to the widow’s behaviour in the second part of the story. This analysis also makes it possible to appreciate fully the impact of the finale on the interna…

Lorenzo Costantini, Leonardo Costantini•BOOK•Magic in Apuleius' ›Apologia‹•2019•Cited by: 1

Despite the growing interest in Apuleius' Apologia or Pro se d e magia , a speech he delivered in AD 158/159 to defend himself against the charge of being a magus , the only comprehensive study on this speech and magic to date is that by Adam Abt (1908). The aim of this volume is to shed new light on the extent to which Apuleius' speech reveals his own knowledge of magic, and on the implications of the dangerous allegations brought against Apulei…

  • An Emendation to Apuleius, Apologia 47.1

    Open Access•Lorenzo Costantini, Leonardo Costantini•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2018•References: 3

The most authoritative testimony for the text of Apuleius’ defence-speech known as Apologia or Pro Se De Magia is a Cassinese MS indicated with the siglum F (Florence, Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, Plut. 68.2), written under the abbotship of Desiderius (1058–1087) in a mature Beneventan script, which also preserves the text of the Metamorphoses and the Florida . The text that F preserves is unsurprisingly not flawless, and in this note I argue …

Open Access•D Ferro, Vania Virgili et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2009•Cited by: 5

The compositional and structural characterization of the constituent alloys of precious metal artefacts is the basis for understanding the technological processes used in the art of the ancient goldsmiths. This research presents a multi-analytical approach to the study of the technologies of ancient jewellery manufacturing through the use of non-traditional methods. The development of original methods, such as the application of hardware devices …

  • Charred plant remains of the Archaic period from the Forum and Palatine

Open Access•Lorenzo Costantini, John Giorgi•ARTICLE•Journal of Roman Archaeology•2001

Our understanding of the arable economy of the early centuries of Rome has been based largely on ancient literary sources to give an idea of the range of crops grown in the area and their possible uses. For Archaic Rome in particular, very little evidence from the physical remains of crops has been available, and this has limited any serious comparison between archaeological evidence and what the literary sources may suggest about the arable agri…
