Reconciling Twin Indicators of Sustainable Development
The Economics of Biodiversity: The Dasgupta Review essentially recommends two indicators of sustainable development: the global ecological footprint that should be within the limits of nature’s capacity, and the change in real national inclusive wealth. Using the welfare economic theory of national accounting, and extending the framework of the Dasgupta Review , we reconcile the two indicators by embedding a country’s contribution to the global e…
Equitable STEM+CS learning experiences for girls of color
Purpose There is a critical need to understand how to attract Black girls and other girls of color to the science, technology, engineering, math, and computer science (STEM+CS) field. This study aims to look at the design and implementation of a CS learning ecosystem that supports girls of color in acquiring critical CS skills starting in middle school. Design/methodology/approach This mixed-method case study included 53 girls, between the ages o…
Are Cognitive, Affective, and Eudaimonic Dimensions of Subjective Well-Being Differently Related to Consumption? Evidence from Japan
In this study, we investigate the relationship between consumption and subjective well-being (SWB). There is clear evidence in the literature that the income–SWB relationship depends on the SWB measure, but the reasons are not fully clear yet; however, the main reason may be related to consumption because most income is used for that. This study is the first to examine directly whether the consumption–SWB relationship differs between affective, c…
Evaluation of an On-line Parenting and Divorce Course
There are very few evidence-based parent education programs focused on divorce even though more and more state court systems are requiring them. This study builds the evidence-base by using a population of parents who were court-mandated to take a parenting class as part of their divorce proceedings. With over 800 parents in the study, we found the on-line parent education program increased parent knowledge of skills in effective communication an…

Intersectionality in the narratives of black women in computing through the education and workforce pipeline
Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the narratives of 93 Black women in computing in the USA to identify salient themes that are at the intersection of race and gender in the field of computer science. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a multi-method approach with a survey to describe the sample and a series of focus groups for in-depth analysis of themes. The qualitative methodology uses a grounded theory and consensual …
Available capital, utilized capital, and shadow prices in inclusive wealth accounting
Previously, accounting for comprehensive or inclusive wealth has focused on the supply side of capital assets. However, human well-being created by capital assets inherently depends on the demand side as well. In particular, if capital is not utilized at its full capacity, then realized or actual human well-being may be less affected by available capital than by effective or utilized capital. In principle, this notion is embodied in a shadow pric…
Backward- and Forward-looking Shadow Prices in Inclusive Wealth Accounting
Attaching weights to the list of capital assets is crucial in inclusive wealth accounting and sustainability assessments. These weights, or shadow prices, can be constructed in theory by looking prospectively at future social profits that the capital in question is expected to yield. In practice, however, both backward- and forward-looking shadow prices are used. This study confirms that these two approaches are theoretically equivalent under str…
Measuring Regional Wealth and Assessing Sustainable Development
Measuring future paths of alternative sustainability indicators
This study measures various indicators for sustainability in this century for four scenarios of SRES (Special Report on Emissions Scenarios) published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to provide a comparable assessment of the scenarios. We assessed the scenarios using a model of Ramsey-type mainframe with cost models for fuel and non-fuel mineral resources, biomass and foods, and an environmental externality. The existing s…
Discounting, Distribution and Disaggregation
To consider the implications of disaggregated consumption and discounting in the context of climate change, we study discounting in a world composed of the rich and the poor; a standard setting in the literature of cost–benefit analysis with distributional considerations. We derive several discount rates for different numéraires, which allow us to discuss intergenerational and intragenerational equity in common terms. In the example of CES‐CRRA u…

What Makes Professional Development Effective? Strategies That Foster Curriculum Implementation
This study uses a sample of 454 teachers engaged in an inquiry science program to examine the effects of different characteristics of professional development on teachers’ knowledge and their ability to implement the program. The authors analyzed results from a survey of teachers served by 28 professional development providers within a hierarchical linear modeling framework. Consistent with findings from earlier studies of effective professional …
Religiosity and Adolescent Substance Use
For more than three decades scholars have debated about if, when, and under what circumstances religiosity deters delinquency. The present study uses multilevel modeling data analytic techniques (i.e., hierarchical linear model [HLM]) and large nationally representative samples of American public high schools (N = 227) and high school seniors (N = 16,595) to examine various unresolved issues in the ongoing debate, with a specific focus on the rel…
