Reassessing Megalithic Spatial Densities in Southwestern Iberia Through Airborne Laser Scanning‐Based Landscape Analysis
Megalithic landscapes in southwestern Iberia have long been reconstructed from heterogeneous regional inventories, often treating megalith spatial density as a proxy for demographic intensity. Here we present a probabilistic, auditable approach to reassessing megalithic densities and landscape dynamics by integrating conventional inventories with high‐resolution airborne laser scanning (ALS) and explicit uncertainty modelling. We compile the West…
Life and Death of the Macrolithic Tools from the Third-millennium cal. bc Necropolis of La Orden-Seminario in Southwest Spain
Macrolithic tools are linked to daily activities and, fundamentally, to settlements, hence their importance for the study of Late Prehistoric societies. However, these objects are also associated with funerary contexts, but have not often been analysed holistically. This paper studies an assemblage of macrolithic elements from three collective tombs from the third millennium cal. bc at the site of La Orden-Seminario (Huelva, Spain), from a theore…
Small Houses of the Dead
This study analyses the funerary activity of small collective tombs with a limited number of individuals in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula during the Copper Age. These small burial spaces are one of the most frequent funerary manifestations and one of the most common forms of megalithic monumentality in the complex societies of this geographical area. The necropolis of La Orden-Seminario is put forward as a detailed case study, applying a…
Choosing the site, getting the stones, building the dolmens
The geoarchaeological study focuses on the lithological characterization and provenance determination of the rocks of the El Pozuelo dolmens. The difficulty of identifying volcanic rocks in the intensely altered and deformed environment of the Iberian Pyrite Belt has required the implementation of a research methodology combining the archaeological and geological analysis of the megaliths and the area surrounding the Los Llanetes group. A total o…
Radiocarbon Chronology of Dolmens in the Iberian Southwest
This paper establishes the chronology of the El Pozuelo megalithic complex and discusses it in the context of other dolmens that have been dated in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The working methodology combines the study of the stratigraphy and architectural sequence with the Bayesian modeling of the 27 AMS 14 C dates obtained for charcoal samples from the four monuments in the Los Llanetes cluster. The most significant chronological re…
Both on-site data-collection surveying technologies and the new possibilities of graphical and cartographical techniques, currently allow us to obtain products that far exceed the traditional topographic maps and detailed representations of the graphical drawings that document the archaeological sites. This paper aims to show, through concrete examples, the advantages of combining the use of different state-of-the-art technologies to achieve a gr…
