An assessment of Attawandaron culinary practices in Southern Ontario, Canada using organic residue analysis from archaeological vessels
This collaborative study between settler archaeologists, members of the Six Nations, and Indigenous scholars explores Attawandaron culinary practices in 15th–17th century Southern Ontario through organic residue analysis (ORA) of ceramic vessels, combined with experimental replication. Twenty-two pottery sherds from five Attawandaron settlements were analyzed from legacy collections curated at Sustainable Archaeology McMaster. Lipids were success…
Patterns of pastoralism
The archaeozoological study of the Indus Valley Civilisation, particularly in the last few decades, has resulted in a better understanding of human-animal interactions, providing information about species that have been commonly found at Indus Valley sites, both wild and domestic. This is also indicative of the nature of animal-based subsistence at these settlements and the interplay between humans, animals, and the environment. However, these st…
Assessing the applicability of protein residues in combination with lipid residues to reconstruct Indus foodways from Gujarat
When extracted and analysed in tandem, proteomics and lipid residue analysis can provide high resolution identification of ancient foodstuff. Here, we apply lipid residue and shotgun proteomic analyses to 11 ceramic vessel sherds from the Gujarat, India-based Indus Valley Civilization site of Kotada Bhadli. Our results demonstrate variable success. Lipids were successfully recovered from each ceramic vessel and suggest the presence of dairy and m…
To waste or not to waste
Waste management is paramount to town planning and ancient civilizations across the world have spent resources and mobilized labor for waste disposal and reuse. The study of waste management practices offers a unique window into the daily lives, social organization, and environmental interactions of ancient societies. In the Indus Valley Civilization, known for its urban planning, understanding waste disposal in rural settlements provides crucial…
Enamel isotopic data from the domesticated animals at Kotada Bhadli, Gujarat, reveals specialized animal husbandry during the Indus Civilization
