  • Landscape exploitation and middle-distance supply of mudbricks for the Carthaginian rampart of Qart Hadasht (Spain)

    Open Access•Benjamín Cutillas-Victoria, Sebastián F Ramallo Asensio et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026•References: 16

Founded in 228/227 BCE, the Carthaginian city of Qart Hadasht in southern Spain became the principal Punic political centre and military port in the western Mediterranean. Its defensive architecture featured a robust casemate wall composed of an outer sandstone face and inner mudbrick walls. Here, the authors present the geoarchaeological analysis of the earthen materials used in the construction of this wall. The results reveal differences in co…

The founding of Qart-Hadasht, or 'New Carthage', in 228/227 BC reaffirmed the Carthaginian presence on the Iberian Peninsula. The city would serve as its main political base and military port in the Western Mediterranean before being lost to Rome in the Second Punic War. Although the conquest was led on the ground by the Barcid family, the town's flourishing also led to an increase in the metropolis's economic and commercial activities. In this s…

Sedimentological, paleobiological, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses of a sediment core retrieved on the seafront of Cartagena Bay were performed after high-resolution sampling. A wide series of dates obtained through radiocarbon and amino acid racemization proved that the Holocene record on the analyzed core began at ca. 7300 yr cal BP. Reinterpretation of the marine seismic profiles indicated that the beginning of this transgression was c…

This work presents the results from the analysis of the bone material from the Byzantine harbor quarter overlapping the Roman theater of Carthago Spartaria (Cartagena, Murcia). From a broad sample of 2,723 fragments from debris pits and garbage dumps, the production strategies and the consuming patterns of the livestock are established during a historical period of the city in which its appearance has nothing to do with the monumental image of a …

    Open Access•Trinidad Torres, Sebastián F Ramallo Asensio et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Here, we sought to reconstruct the Pleistocene and Holocene evolution of Cartagena Bay. Therefore, 16 borehole cores were analysed with the following aims: (1) to define a chronological framework; (2) to obtain data on the palaeoenvironment; and (3) to establish the relationship with human activities, especially focused on the reconstruction of the Carthago Nova (also known as Qart Hadasht) conquest. A total of 147 samples were recovered for amin…

  • Reconstrucción virtual paleotopográfixca de la ciudad histórica de Cartagena (España)

    Open Access•Josefina García–León, Josefina García-León et al.•ARTICLE•Virtual Archaeology Review•2017

The city of Cartagena and its immediate surroundings have experienced significant topographical changes throughout its history. Originally built on five hills which border south and west with the Mediterranean Sea, the city has expanded to the north over the last five decades, occupying a lacustrine system which has now dried up due to the diversion of riverbeds which, from time to time, used to flood the place. These changes have been documented…
