Underwater Aircraft Site Formation and Legacy: A Case Study From Malta
Ancient glass from the island of Malta: A preliminary study of Phoenician-Punic, Roman and post-Roman finds
First report on the provenance of some volcanic saddle-querns from the archaeological site of Tarxien (Malta)
Maritimity in Stone: An Archaeology of Early Modern and Modern Ship Graffiti in the Maltese Islands (ca. 1530–1945)
From Discovery to Public Consumption: The Process of Mapping and Evaluating Underwater Cultural Heritage in Malta
The in situ promotion and preservation of underwater cultural heritage sites is one of the main ideas of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage. Currently, most shipwrecks are found in water shallower than the 50 m contour. The continued technological advances and increases in technical diving and deep-water exploration point towards a shift in this statistic, which is set to increase exponentially in the not-too-…
The Innovative and State of the Art Public Access Management of Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage
The obligation to preserve underwater cultural heritage is a core principle of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. A key element of this obligation is a balance of scientific research, protection, and the promotion of responsible access to underwater cultural heritage sites. Such a balance requires the setting up of a network of communication between the tourism and heritage sectors on the one hand and the…
The Cargo of the Phoenician Shipwreck Off Xlendi Bay, Gozo: Analysis of the Objects Recovered Between 2014–2017 and Their Historical Contexts
This article describes the ceramic and saddle quern cargoes recorded on a Phoenician shipwreck found off Xlendi Bay, Gozo, dated by the finds to 700-650 BC. The ceramics are divided into three main groups: Tyrrhenian-style amphoras, Phoenician-Punic western amphoras, and large ollas. Discussion of the likely provenance of each type allows preliminary proposals concerning the ship's route. The extent of the site and an estimate of the total cargo …
The Xlendi Bay shipwreck (Gozo, Malta): A petrographic and typological study of an archaic ceramic cargo
An underwater survey off the southwest coast of the island of Gozo revealed a well-preserved shipwreck 110 m below the surface. The site belonged to a previously unknown wreck with a cargo of volcanic millstones and ceramic amphorae dating to the 7th century BC. This article presents the first results of thin-section analysis taken from the pottery objects, and concludes that the ship was carrying a heterogeneous cargo of amphora-borne goods from…
Geoarchaeology of the 18th century Qoroq shipwreck, Caspian Sea, Iran: A tale of sailing in a dynamic environment
Pantelleria Island as a centre of production for the Archaic Phoenician trade in basaltic millstones: New evidence recovered and sampled from a shipwreck off Gozo (Malta) and a terrestrial site at Cád…
Submerged speleothem in Malta indicates tectonic stability throughout the Holocene
Submerged caves represent potential archives of speleothems with continental and marine biogenic layers. In turn, these can be used to reconstruct relative sea-level changes. This study presents new data on the tectonic behaviour of the island of Malta during the Holocene. These data were obtained from a speleothem sampled, during an underwater survey, at a depth of −14.5 m, inside a recently discovered submerged cave. Since the cave was mainly f…
