C Dating of Lead White in Painted Decorations
Radiocarbon dating of lead white has progressed considerably in the last decade. Today, the protocol enables the analysis of various types of samples: pure lead white in cosmetics, ancient and modern paint layers containing lead white and oil, and mixtures of lead white and calcite. However, it has also been shown that the presence of a large amount of calcite in lead white paint can alter the radiocarbon result through contamination with dead ca…
Bloomery slags from Puisaye (France)
Archaeological research conducted as part of the PCR and TerriFer project in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region has identified Puisaye as a major center of primary iron production, active from the Iron Age through to the end of the Middle Ages. A total of 110 slag heaps were investigated and sampled through surface surveys, excavations and waste collection. The bloomery slags were classified based on their morphology, chemical composition (by ICP…

Thermal Decomposition of Lead White for Radiocarbon Dating of Paintings
Lead carbonates were used as cosmetic and pigment since Antiquity. The pigment, known as lead white, was generally composed of cerussite and hydrocerussite. Unlike most ancient pigments, lead white was obtained by a synthetic route involving metallic lead, vinegar and organic matter. Fermentation of organic matter produces heat and CO 2 emission, leading to the formation of carbonates. As lead white is formed by trapping CO 2 , radiocarbon ( 14 C…
An Analytical Methodology for the Study of the Corrosion of Ferrous Archaeological Remains in Soils
In the context of the cultural heritage, a methodology based on field and laboratory approaches is developed for studying the long-term corrosion of iron. Moreover it has been adapted to the study of archaeological artefacts buried in anoxic soils in the specific case of in situ preservation. The environmental parameters are determined on the archaeological sites and artefacts are collected and characterized using complementary multi-scale techni…
