  • Why do parents underinvest in their children’s education? Evidence from China

Open Access•Jiyuan Wang, Rob Alessie et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2025

In this paper we study whether the presence of financial constraints that limit parents’ ability to borrow and the existence of educational fixed costs can explain the underinvestment of parents in their children’s human capital. We first incorporate these two potential mechanisms into the theoretical model of Raut and Tran (2005) and then we test their empirical relevance using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS…

  • Consumption and time use responses to unemployment: Implications for the lifecycle model

    Open Access•Jim Been, Eduard Suari‐Andreu et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2024•References: 43

In this study, we analyse the effects of unemployment on consumption and time use. To do so, we employ a micro panel dataset for the Netherlands containing a large set of expenditure and time use categories. Our results show a small negative effect of unemployment on expenditures, and large positive effects on time spent on home production and leisure activities. We do not find evidence for complementarity between leisure and consumption or for s…

  • Do early life and contemporaneous macroconditions explain health at older ages: An application to functional limitations of Dutch older individuals

Open Access•France Portrait, Rob Alessie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 1

This paper presents an approach that assesses the role of early life and contemporaneous macroconditions in explaining health at older ages. In particular, we investigate the role of exposure to diseases and economic conditions during infancy and childhood, as well as the effect of current health care facilities. Specific attention is paid to the impact of unobserved heterogeneity, selective attrition, and omitted relevant macrovariables. We appl…

Rob Alessie, Rob J M Alessie et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2004

This paper analyzes the ownership dynamics of stocks and mutual funds, using representative household panel data, the Dutch CentER Savings Survey 1993–1998. A bivariate dynamic binary-choice model is introduced, allowing for interactions between the two types of assets. We find that unobserved heterogeneity and state dependence play a large role for both types of assets. The positive relation between ownership of one type in one period and the ot…
