Soils of Some Norse Settlements in Southwestern Greenland
Soils of some former Norse settlements in southwestern Greenland were investigated and found to have well-developed, brightly coloured soil profiles in spite of the high latitude. The soils are generally acidic, sandy, strongly organic and high in exchange cations. Iron extraction data suggest a moderate degree of pedologic activity. The presence of smectite and interstratified hydroxy-aluminum vermiculite is likely representative of an early sta…
The Physical Environment of the Faeroe Islands
Observations on a Succession of Soils on Mt. Giluwe, Eastern New Guinea
The effects of altitude and a period of summit glaciation on the andesitic ash deposits of tropical Mt. Giluwe in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea have resulted in spatial distribution of soils in semi-parallel zones around the mountain. Field and laboratory analyses of typical soils from the five major zones were undertaken. Micrographs of thin sections and some electro microscope diffractograms as well as the results of some chemical-physi…
The Tropical Alpine Soils of Mt. Giluwe, Australian New Guinea
The tropical alpine soils occurring on the glaciated grassland summit area of Mt. Giluwe, New Guinea, are described morphologically and some analytical data are presented. The soils are developed from andesitic till and are generally shallow. With the exception of minor areas around tarns, all the soils have a very characteristic and unusual morphology which consists of brown organic topsoils overlying black organic subsoils which rest on polishe…
The Soils and Land Use of the Area Occupied by the Enga of the New Guinea Highlands
