Forty‐five years in climatology—a personal odyssey
This article presents a personal perspective on an academic and research vocation spanning a period of over 45 years. It starts with my early involvement in geography and climatology and terminates with my recent experience in a large interdisciplinary research venture. The presentation highlights, with specific examples, the importance of mentors. Also emphasized is the indispensable input of colleagues and graduate students to successful resear…
The Annual Carbon Budget for Fen and Forest in a Wetland at Arctic Treeline
Three separate research efforts conducted in the same wetland-peatland system in the northern Hudson Bay Lowland near the town of Churchill, Manitoba, allow a comparison of two carbon budget estimates, one derived from long-term growth rates of organic soil and the other based on shorter-term flux measurements. For a tundra fen and an open subarctic forest, calculations of organic soil accumulation or loss over the last half-century indicate that…
Damming James Bay
The damming of James Bay as proposed by the grand Canal Scheme will influence the hydrology of the coastal marshes. The salinity regime of two James Bay marshes were compared to understand the processes that govern salinity in the zone near mean high water (mhw) and to predict changes that may result from this proposed impoundment. Data suggest that sites along southern James Bay would be minimally affected because of the current low level of sal…
Damming James Bay
The proposed grand Canal project calls for the damming of James Bay and the diversion of its water southward. This first part of a two‐part study models some potential impacts on the climate, water balance, and growth patterns in the James Bay coastal zone. Use is made of a linear relationship of Bowen ratio and temperature, developed from studies of coastal wetlands in southern and northwestern James Bay and central Hudson Bay. It is hypothesize…
The Radiation Balance of Typical Terrain Units in the Low Arctic
This study was designed to achieve an understanding of the behavior of the summer radiation balance for a diversity of terrain types characteristic of the low Arctic near treeline in order to promote more accurate modeling of net radiation from measured or calculated solar radiation or all-wave radiation. Components of the radiation balance, including net radiation, incoming and reflected solar radiation, incoming and outgoing longwave radiation,…
Relations Between Radiant Energy Supply and Evapotranspiration From Sloping Terrain
The Effect of the Regional Wind on Air Pollution in Hamilton, Ontario
By plotting low‐volume aerosol counts as indices of pollution in Hamilton a pattern of dual pollution cells of equal intensity centring on the downtown business area and the heavy industrial zone emerges. Pollution levels are twice as great under east winds with accompanying atmospheric stability than for winds from all other sectors. With winds from the easterly sector the industrial pollutants are forced and locked into the lower city. When a m…
