  • The potential for U.S. economic leverage on the USSR∗

    Herbert S Levine, Francis W Rushing et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1979•References: 2

In recent years considerable controversy has been generated with respect to the possible leverage that the United States may have acquired by virtue of expanded economic relations with the Soviet Union. This article reviews the question and concludes that the benefits to the Soviet economy do, indeed, confer upon U.S. policymakers the potential for limited leverage over certain aspects of Soviet policy. Concrete steps toward the implementation of…

  • A Jewish Collaborator in Nazi Germany

    Open Access•Herbert S Levine•ARTICLE•Central European History•1975•References: 4

Hitler's takeover of power in January 1933 created a new and dangerous situation for German Jewry. Nazi policy developed gradually, but before the spring of 1933 was well advanced there could be little doubt that serious injury was intended toward the Jewish community. The “wildcat” anti-Semitic actions of undisciplined SA men were followed by the national boycott of Jewish businesses conducted on April 1. Legislative and administrative measures,…

  • An American View of Economic Relations with the USSR

    Open Access•Herbert S Levine•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1974

The current rise in US-USSR trade has its ante cedents, which are discussed briefly in the first section of this paper. Attention is then focused on the basic economic reasons which might be adduced for the manifest increased Soviet interest in expanded economic relations with the United States. Special emphasis is given to the Soviet desire to import advanced Western technology. The salient issues in the current discussions of expanded US-USSR e…

Yet, the author shows that did not really understand the basic economic problems of farmers. On the other hand, did demonstrate an unusual knowledge of, and interest in, conservation, ecology, and scientific farming. As Wik says, views on technology, conservation, ecology, and the mechanization of rural America were generally prophetic, enlightened, progressive and often far ahead of times (pp. 160-61). Other topics covered include Ford's flirtat…

The notion that Hitler's Third Reich was a monolithic and efficient dictatorship has by now been safely buried, although it may persist in the popular imagination. This essay is intended as a contribution to the newer phase of the historical postmortem on National Socialism, the attempt to trace the precise mechanism of decision-making and internal policy-diversion in the Third Reich. Distortion of policy, as the result of disagreements among lea…
