Vā Moana
Oceania’s crucible effect, Moana Cosmopolitans and the reinvention of vā
[From Publisher's description of the book] Vā may be a small word, but it carries expansive meaning. Rooted in Indigenous Pacific knowledges—Samoan vā, Tongan tā-vā, Māori and Hawaiian wā—this concept of relational space binds people, ancestors and cosmologies across time and place. Since the late 1990s, vā has become a powerful framework in academic and cultural contexts, energising conversations across Oceania and beyond. As the world grapples …
Tauhi fonua, tauhi vā
Thought and Identity'.In this talanoa with Albert L. Refiti and Ata Siulua, Ka'ili summarises the development of Tvism, the Indigenous Tongan T-V philosophy of reality, which to date has been the only contemporary critical theory movement to emerge out of Moananui.Kaili also discusses recent developments in his research tracing genealogical lines of flight in the Tongan cosmogony that connect to Tvism. 1 Tvita O. Making relations
This paper addresses the problems of data colonialism from a standpoint that not only challenges the legitimacy of colonial economics but also the epistemological legitimacy of data as a raw material from which knowledge and knowledge systems might be generated. Our reflexive investigation centres on knowledge systems of Aotearoa-New Zealand and the wider Moana Oceania through embodied traditions of wānanga and talanoa. As we explain, these offer…
Indigenising research
Growing interest in Pacific issue's has meant a surge in Pacific research across the globe. Sadly, some research on Pacific people has been done without Pacific knowledge, wisdom and culture. As Pacific researchers, we understand the importance of outputs that interweave our ancestral and cultural wisdom, whilst centring and privileging our people's narratives. Through the birth of our Moanaroa Pacific Research group, we explore the importance of…

Vā at the time of Covid-19
In 2019, the Vā Moana–Pacific Spaces research group at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) began to investigate how core Moana and Māori values can be translated from onsite, embodied engagements into digital environments. This was prompted by our wish to provide access to all those who could not travel to attend a conference in late 2021 for our Marsden-funded research project, ‘ Vā Moana: Space and relationality in Pacific thought and ident…
The Forked Centre
This paper will focus on a spatial duality paradigm that exists at the heart of Polynesian spaces where the notion of private and public is opposite to the Western concept of space. The centre as a limit in Polynesian thinking is the point of extreme transparency where the private individual becomes obliterated. It is the domain of what is termed in Samoa the vā resides. So what is central to any sense of space in Polynesia is the vā or the in-be…
