  • Are physical activity and sleep associated with emotional self-regulation in toddlers? a cross-sectional study

    Open Access•Abhigale F L D’Cruz, Katherine Downing et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This cross-sectional study suggests that sleep may be important for emotional self-regulation in toddlers, but the role of physical activity remains unclear. These findings suggest that interventions targeting sleep duration and sleep behaviours during the early toddler years may benefit the positive development of emotional self-regulation skills in this population

  • Variation in sleep profiles in children with ADHD and associated clinical characteristics

Open Access•Emma Sciberras, Harley Hiscock et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2023

BACKGROUND: Sleep difficulties are common in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, sleep problems are multifaceted and little is known about the variation in sleep difficulties across children with ADHD. We examined the profiles of sleep difficulties in children with ADHD and associated clinical factors (e.g. co-occurring mental health conditions, stimulant use and parent mental health). METHODS: Data from two ha…

  • Categorical and dimensional approaches to the developmental relationship between ADHD and irritability

Open Access•Rania Johns‐Mead, Nandita Vijayakumar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2023

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and irritability commonly co-occur, and follow similar developmental trajectories from childhood to adolescence. Understanding of the developmental relationship between these co-occurrences is limited. This study provides a longitudinal assessment of how ADHD diagnostic status and symptom patterns predict change in irritability. METHODS: A community sample of 337 participants (45.2% ADHD…

  • Sleeping Sound Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Open Access•Nicole Papadopoulos, Emma Sciberras et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2022

BACKGROUND: Behavioural sleep problems are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, evidence for the efficacy of behavioural sleep interventions is limited. This study examined the efficacy of a brief behavioural sleep intervention in autistic children. It was hypothesised that the intervention would reduce overall child sleep problems (primary outcome), in addition to improvements in children's social, emotional, cognitiv…

  • Child and Parent Physical Activity, Sleep, and Screen Time During Covid-19 and Associations With Mental Health

Open Access•León Olivé, Lisa S Olive et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has afforded the opportunity for some to improve lifestyle behaviours, while for others it has presented key challenges. Adverse changes in global lifestyle behaviours, including physical activity, sleep, and screen time can affect proximal mental health and in turn distal cardiovascular outcomes. We investigated differences in physical activity, sleep, and screen time in parents and children during early stages of the COVID…

  • Associations Between Anxiety and Home Learning Difficulties in Children and Adolescents with ADHD During the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Anna M Jackson, Glenn Melvin et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2022

The COVID-19 pandemic has markedly impacted functioning for children and adolescents including those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We explored home learning difficulties (HLD) during COVID-19 restrictions in Australian children (aged 5-17) with ADHD, aiming to: (1) describe home learning experiences, and (2) examine associations between child anxiety (i.e., concurrent anxiety symptoms and pre-existing anxiety disorder stat…

  • Health‐related quality of life of children with low language from early childhood to adolescence

Open Access•Ha Le, Fiona Mensah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2021

BACKGROUND: Low language abilities are known to be associated with significant adverse long-term outcomes. However, associations between low language and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are unclear. We aimed to (a) examine the association between low language and HRQoL from 4 to 13 years and (b) classify the children's trajectories of HRQoL and language and examine the association between language and HRQoL trajectories. METHODS: Data were…

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability

Open Access•Nicole Papadopoulos, Chloe Emonson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Sleep problems are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, few studies have undertaken group comparisons of sleep profiles and factors associated with poorer sleep between children with ASD without intellectual disability (ID; hereafter referred to as ASD) and ASD with co-occurring ID (hereafter referred to as ASD + ID). This study aimed to (1) compare child (sleep problems and emotional and behavioural problems (EBPs)) a…

  • Study Protocol for the Covid-19 Pandemic Adjustment Survey (CPAS)

Open Access•Elizabeth Westrupp, Elizabeth M Westrupp et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

This study will provide timely information on the mental health impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on parents and children in Australia; identify communities, parents, families, and children most at risk of poor outcomes; and identify potential factors to address in clinical and public health interventions to reduce risk

Australian parents of children aged 0-18 years were recruited via social media between April 8 and April 28, 2020, when Australians were experiencing social distancing/isolation measures for the first time. As part of a larger survey, participants were asked to respond via an open-ended question about how COVID-19 had impacted their family. A total …
