The Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire in Lebanon and the UK: A comparison of the psychometric properties in each country
The aim of this study was to validate the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue v. 1.5) in a Lebanese sample and compare its factorial structure to that of a UK sample. There were similar gender and age distributions in both samples as well as satisfactory structural reliabilities at the global, factor, and facet levels. Results from exploratory factor analysis showed a four‐factor structure similar to that originally obtained by the…
Developments in Trait Emotional Intelligence Research
Trait emotional intelligence (“trait EI”) concerns our perceptions of our emotional abilities, that is, how good we believe we are in terms of understanding, regulating, and expressing emotions in order to adapt to our environment and maintain well-being. In this article, we present succinct summaries of selected findings from research on (a) the location of trait EI in personality factor space, (b) the biological underpinnings of the construct, …
Trait emotional intelligence, forgiveness, and gratitude in Cape Verdean and Portuguese students

The role of general cognitive ability in moderating the relation of adverse life events to emotional and behavioural problems
Previous studies have established the role of various measures of cognitive functioning in dampening the association between adverse life events (‘life stress’) and adolescents’ emotional and behavioural problems. However, it is not yet clear if general cognitive ability (‘intelligence’) is a protective factor. In this study of 1,175 10‐ to 19‐year‐olds in five secondary schools in England, we explored this issue. We found that even after control…
Residential mobility, neighbourhood deprivation and children's behaviour in the UK
Trait emotional intelligence influences on academic achievement and school behaviour: Trait emotional intelligence
BACKGROUND. Trait emotional intelligence (trait EI or trait emotional self-efficacy) refers to individuals' emotion-related self-perceptions (Petrides, Furnham, & Mavroveli, 2007). The children's trait EI sampling domain provides comprehensive coverage of their affective personality. Preliminary evidence shows that the construct has important implications for children's psychological and behavioural adjustment. AIMS. This study investigates the a…
Trait Emotional Intelligence and Disposition for Forgiveness
The association of trait emotional intelligence with a disposition for forgiveness was explored. In addition, the relationship between emotional intelligence and affect was also examined. A sample of 268 Portuguese students completed measures of trait emotional intelligence, disposition to forgive, and affect. Results demonstrated that trait emotional intelligence scores were negatively associated with lasting resentment and negative affect and p…
Exploring the relationships between trait emotional intelligence and objective socio-emotional outcomes in childhood
Background Trait emotional intelligence (trait EI or trait emotional self-efficacy) is a constellation of emotion-related self-perceptions and dispositions located at the lower levels of personality hierarchies. This paper examines the validity of this construct, as operationalized by the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire-Child Form (TEIQue-CF), in primary schoolchildren.Aims The main aim was to examine the construct validity of trait EI…
Trait emotional intelligence, psychological well‐being and peer‐rated social competence in adolescence
The trait emotional intelligence (trait EI or trait emotional self‐efficacy) framework provides comprehensive coverage of emotion‐related self‐perceptions and dispositions. In this study, we investigated the relationship between trait EI and four distinct socioemotional criteria on a sample of Dutch adolescents ( N = 282; 136 girls, 146 boys; mean age = 13.75 years). As hypothesized, trait EI was positively associated with adaptive coping styles …
