Body Image and School Engagement in Early Adolescence
Body image concerns may contribute to school disengagement during late childhood, but this has not been well investigated. This study examined longitudinal associations between different dimensions of body image (body dissatisfaction and weight perception) and school engagement (affective, behavioural, and cognitive) in a sample of 9- to 12-year-old Canadian children ( N = 1,070) over 8 months. Results indicated that children’s body dissatisfacti…
Bidirectional Associations Between Body Image Concerns and Sense of Competence and Relatedness in Students
INTRODUCTION: Psychological difficulties can impede the satisfaction of competence and relatedness needs, which are essential for students' well-being and academic achievement. Body image concerns are common psychological difficulties among youth. However, the relationship between body image and these fundamental needs at school remains underexplored. Therefore, the present study examined the longitudinal associations between students' body image…
Racial microaggression and anxiety in young adults
Increasing reports of racial microaggressions raise concerns about their impact on young adults’ mental health. Social support can act as a protective process in the association between racial microaggressions and mental health symptoms. In this article, we used an egocentric network approach to examine the extent to which network size and functions of support moderated the effect of racial microaggressions on anxiety among racialized and White y…
The role of friends in the development of children’s classroom behavioral engagement and peer acceptance in kindergarten
Using personality traits to predict correspondence between self-perception of academic competence and achievement
Examining the associations between mothers' motivation to regulate their own eating behaviors, food parenting practices and perceptions of their child's food responsiveness
Teachers' behaviour and children's academic achievement
BACKGROUND: Children's academic achievement is considerably influenced by genetic factors, which rarely operate independently of environmental influences such as teachers' behaviour. Praise and punitive discipline are commonly used management strategies by teachers. However, their effects on the genetic expression of children's academic achievement are still unclear. AIMS: This study examined potential gene-environment interactions in the associa…
Linking High School Students’ Achievement Goal Orientations With Their Competence Beliefs and Their Perception of Teachers’ Emotional Support During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescents have experienced limitations in their everyday activities. Consequently, their mental health has become an area of concern. However, there has been much less of a focus on the factors and mechanisms contributing to how they have approached their various academic activities during the pandemic. The current study fills this gap by investigating associations between adolescents’ competence beliefs and percep…
The interchangeability of liking and friend nominations to measure peer acceptance and friendship
Two studies examine the convergence between measures of friendship and measures of liking in the assessment of friendship and peer acceptance. In the first study, 551 (301 boys and 250 girls) Canadian primary school children (ages 8–11) nominated friends and liked-most classmates. In the second study, 282 (127 boys and 155 girls) US primary school children (ages 9–11) nominated friends and rated classmates on a sociometric preference scale. The r…
Interplay between peer experiences and classroom behavioral engagement throughout early childhood
Covid-19-related anxiety and trauma symptoms predict decreases in body image satisfaction in children
Keep calm and earn more points
The use of reward systems is common in education, particularly at the primary school level. Indeed, there are very few classes in primary schools in which such systems are not implemented. Token economy are used to encourage students to adopt appropriate target social and academic behaviors. However, consensus on their effectiveness is lacking. It is beyond the scope of this article to determine whether token economy systems actually achieve thei…
Changes in Students’ Achievement Motivation in the Context of the Covid-19 Pandemic
Students’ mental health has been an increased concern since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, academic outcomes have received very little attention. In this study, changes in students’ achievement motivation are investigated using an expectancy–value framework. Participants (n = 90) were high school students (grades 9 and 10) who reported on their expectancy and value perceptions in regard to learning before and during the pandemic …
Differences in Internalizing Symptoms Anticipate Adolescent Friendship Dissolution
This study examined the degree to which internalizing symptoms predict adolescent friendship instability. A total of 397 adolescents identified 499 same-sex reciprocated friendships that originated in the seventh grade (M = 13.18 years). Discrete-time survival analyses were conducted with Grade 7 peer, teacher, and self-reports of internalizing symptoms as predictors of friendship dissolution across Grades 8-12. Differences between friends in dep…
The moderating role of peer norms in the associations of social withdrawal and aggression with peer victimization
This study examined the moderating role of classroom injunctive norms salience regarding social withdrawal and regarding aggression in the longitudinal association between these behaviors and peer victimization. A total of 1,769 fourth through sixth graders (895 girls, M = 10.25 years, SD = 1.03) from 23 schools (67 classrooms) completed a peer nomination inventory in the fall (T1) and spring (T2) of the same academic year. Participants circled t…
Gene–environment interplay in the link of friends’ and nonfriends’ behaviors with children’s social reticence in a competitive situation
This study used a genetically informed design to assess the effects of friends' and nonfriends' reticent and dominant behaviors on children's observed social reticence in a competitive situation. Potential gene-environment correlations (rGE) and gene-environment interactions (GxE) in the link between (a) friends' and nonfriends' behaviors and (b) children's social reticence were examined. The sample comprised 466 twin children (i.e., the target c…
The additive and interactive roles of aggression, prosocial behavior, and social preference in predicting resource control in young children
Purpose Distinguishing between physical and social aggression, this study aimed to examine whether the predictive effect of aggression on resource control is moderated by prosocial behavior and corresponds to a linear or a curvilinear trend. Moderating effects of children's social preference among peers and child sex in this context were also tested. Design/methodology/approach Based on a sample of 682 kindergarten children (348 girls; average ag…
