Development of complex executive function over childhood
This longitudinal study modeled children's complex executive function (EF) development using the Groton Maze Learning Task (GMLT). Using a cohort-sequential design, 147 children (61 males, 5.5–11 years) were recruited from six multicultural primary schools in Melbourne and Perth, Australia. Race/ethnicity data were not available. Children were assessed on the GMLT at 6-month intervals over 2-years between 2010 and 2012. Growth curve models descri…
Measure reliability of the Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Children Scale via Rasch analysis
BACKGROUND: The self-concept of children has an impact on later behavioural development and psychopathology; therefore, evidence of the accurate measurement of self-concept is important. Harter and Pike's (1984, Child Development, 55, 1969) commonly used measure of self-concept, the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Children, has demonstrated varying evidence of its construct validity and reliability, particularly …
The relationship between motor skills and psychosocial factors in young children
BackgroundThe elaborated environmental stress hypothesis (EESH) provides a framework that describes how motor skills may indirectly cause internalizing problems through various mediating psychosocial factors. While there is evidence to support this framework, little is known about how the proposed relationships may vary across different stages of development.AimsThis study aimed to investigate whether peer problems and perceived self-competence m…
Developmental coordination disorder and internalizing problems in children
Rationale, design and methods for a randomised and controlled trial of the impact of virtual reality games on motor competence, physical activity, and mental health in children with developmental coor…

Rationale, design and methods for a randomised and controlled trial to investigate whether home access to electronic games decreases children's physical activity
This trial is registered in the Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN 12609000279224)
The role of early fine and gross motor development on later motor and cognitive ability
The relationship between bullying and self-worth in children with movement coordination problems
Background. Past research has indicated that there is a negative relationship between victimization and self-worth. Furthermore, children with movement problems such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are considered at risk of both victimization and low self-worth.Aims. This study investigated the relationship between peer-victimization and self-worth in a group of children with DCD and control children.Sample. Forty-three children aged…
The Purpose in Life Scale
The aim of the present research was to further investigate (a) the structure of the Purpose in Life test (PIL) using confirmatory factor analytic techniques,(b) the reliability of PIL scores, and (c) the validity of the PIL. Participants were 357 social drinkers (not in alcohol treatment) and 137 treatment drinkers (in alcohol treatment). With the exclusion of 3 items, a unidimensional measurement model for the PIL provided an adequate fit for so…
The Purpose in Life Scale
The identification of children with developmental coordination disorder by class and physical education teachers
Background. Children diagnosed with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) have difficulty performing coordinated movements. In addition, these children have been found to have long-term social, emotional, behavioural and academic problems. Early identification is therefore important, and teachers may be very useful in this identification process.Aims. In the present study, the ability of physical education and class teachers to identify child…
