  • O Lobby e o Interesse Público

    Open Access•Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Ciências…•1997•Cited by: 2

    Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•Revue française de science…•1996•Cited by: 1

Pluralism. a conceptual and comparative analysis Luigi Graziano Pluralism is a polymorphous concept still in need of clarification, especially as its underlying philosophy is being exported to a number of post-communist regimes. There are various brands of pluralism and one task for research is to determine some of thé reasons for the success of the American variant. The essay reviews the history of this tradition of thought in a comparative pers…

  • On Special Interests, Public Interests, and Unequal Representation

    Open Access•Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 7

One theme runs through the various articles in this issue of the IPSR, either explicitly or by implication—the “common good.” A second theme is inclusion and exclusion, that is, the group system judged in terms of some standard of public equity. Based on American material, this article tries to bring the two lines of argument together in order to elucidate the contours of “private representation.” It does so by analyzing how contemporary politica…

  • The Development and Institutionalization of Political Science in Italy

    Open Access•Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•1987•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Italian political science has grown remarkably in the last two decades both in quantity and quality. Such a growth, however, came much later than in other European countries due to a number of cultural and institutional obstacles. The development of the discipline and the timing of such development are seen as the result of interaction of four broad sets of factors. They are: (1) the effort by scholars in the 1960s to establish political science …

Open Access•Luigi Graziano, Fiorenzo Girotti et al.•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•1984•Cited by: 1

The study focuses on two questions. One is the degree of autonomy of local party leaders in Italy in selecting coalition partners in local executives. The second and related problem is to clarify the role of local politics and coalitions in the general strategy of Italian political parties. The study was conducted through the analysis of interparty negotiations both at the center and the periphery that followed the 1980 administrative elections. …

  • The Historic Compromise and Consociational Democracy

    Open Access•Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•1980•Cited by: 7•References: 17

The article is an attempt to analyze the current strategy of the Italian Communist Party ("compromesso storico") in the light of consociation theory. It is divided into two parts. Part I explores the foundations and operational traits of consociational democracy as a system which has historically prevailed in countries characterized by strong bourgeois hegemony. Part II explores the applicability of the model to polarized systems. The main argume…

  • On Political Compromise

    Open Access•Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•Government and Opposition•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 6

SINCE 1976 ITALY HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING A POLITICAL STALEmate which should not be confused with the periodical difficulties of the system. What is at stake is the capacity of Italian democracy to ensure change in a peaceful manner – which I take to be one of the main functions of democracy. The political essence of the crisis lies in the Christian Democrats' (DC) growing incapacity to assure the governability of the country and in the problem of p…

    Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•Revue française de science…•1977•Cited by: 1

  • A Conceptual Framework for the Study of Clientelistic Behavior

    Open Access•Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•1976•Cited by: 30

Current conceptualizations of political clientelism are inadequate on two related grounds: they do not clearly specify the distinctive characteristics of the clientelistic association and the impact of such associations on the development of the political system. The framework here offered, which is based on Homans’ and Blau's exchange theory, is an attempt to meet both analytical requirements. It suggests that a clientelistic association is a dy…

  • Patron‐client Relationships in Southern Italy

    Open Access•Luigi Graziano•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•1973•Cited by: 43•References: 7

Political clientelism in Southern Italy has shown great persistence and capacity for conditioning the entire Italian political development. Accounting for these characteristics, clientelism is better understood as the product of the incomplete capitalistic rationalization of the Southern economy. Throughout the 19th century in Sicily, the feudo remained the basis of the economic and social structure, while in the continental South the feudal syst…
