Direction of Wording Effects in Balanced Scales
This study investigated the degree to which statistical item selection is effective in reducing direction-of-wording effects in balanced affective measures developed from relatively small item pools. A pool of Likert-type loneliness items and their reversals was partitioned into balanced subsets by random and statistical item selection. Factor analyses of the alternate forms indicated that selection of items with high item-total correlations prod…
The Factor Structure of the Iowa Self-Assessment Inventory
This paper presents results of analyses related to the factor structure of the Iowa Self-Assessment Inventory (ISAI), an instrument measuring the following seven functional characteristics of the elderly: (a) economic resources, (b) cognitive status, (c) mobility, (d) physical health, (e) emotional balance, (f) social support, and (g) alienation. Prior evidence supporting these seven dimensions derived from two separate studies; one study support…

A National Survey of Spanish Language Testing for Placement or Outcome Assessment at B.A.‐granting Institutions in the United States 1
Currently, very little is known about foreign language testing for placement or outcome assessment at B.A.‐granting institutions in the United States. This research project is part of a newly instituted unit at the University of Iowa called the Foreign Language Assessment Project (FLAP). FLAP has two principal goals for its test development: the first is to improve articulation of foreign language study between feeder high schools and The Univers…
Issues Related to the Validation of the Iowa Self-Assessment Inventory
This paper reports on a study which examined psychometric properties of the Iowa Self-Assessment Inventory (ISAI), an instrument designed to assess functional characteristics of the elderly across six dimensions: social resources, economic resources, mental health, physical health, activities of daily living, and cognitive status. The ISAI differs from some other multidimensional functional assessment instrument like the Duke Older Americans Reso…

Sequential Testing for Dichotomous Decisions
Two sequential testing procedures for dichotomous decisions were investigated using existing item response data of 4840 college students on three achievement tests. The assignment rules for the sequential test procedures and for short conventional tests were developed using half the sample of students and cross-validated using the other half. In general, the first type of sequential test required an average of approximately half as many items as …
Individual Differences in the Learning of Verbally and Pictorially Presented Paired Associates
Current educational technology makes it possible to provide for individual differences in learning as never before. Since the introduction of branching programs for simple teaching machines (Crowder, 1960), individualized speed-sequence-content information (based on student entering behaviors and ongoing performance) is now easily incorporated into classroom instruction through the continual data processing/program modification of computerized sy…
The Effect of Race and Sex on College Admission
Applications for admission were sent to a random sample of 240 American colleges and universities. For three different student ability levels, forms that were identical in all respects, save race and sex, were prepared. Each college was sent a single application with a randomly assigned race, sex, and ability level. Contrary to our expectations, white applicants were accepted slightly more frequently than black. In accordance with our predictions…
Effect of Reliability and Validity on Power of Statistical Tests
Statistical Significance as a Decision Rule
The Development and Evaluation of Several Programmed Testing Methods
Seven programmed test procedures were developed and investigated using existing data on 190 verbal-type items for 4,885 students. Tests were scored as if the student had taken items in the order implied by the test. Shortened conventional tests were also scored for comparative purposes. The criteria against which these procedures were evaluated were the 190-item total test score and four outside criterion tests. Against the criterion of reproduci…

An Exploratory Study of Programmed Tests
One approach to the reduction of testing time is through the use of “programmed tests,” which are tests based on a sequential system of branching in which a subject is directed to items appropriate to his ability level. The programmed tests considered in the present paper comprised two major sections: (1) A routing section which contains the branching necessary to direct the subject to the appropriate items, and (2) a measurement section which co…
